Lignocellulosic biomass from agricultural waste to the circular economy: a review with focus on biofuels, biocomposites and bioplastics

Muhammad Mujtaba et al.

Summary: In response to the global warming crisis caused by uncontrolled greenhouse gas production, industries are striving to reduce their dependence on petrochemicals and petroleum-based industrial components and replace them with biobased, sustainable, and environmentally friendly alternatives. Agricultural waste, particularly lignocellulosic biomass, provides a significant resource for the development of various bio-products. Recent advancements in integrated biorefineries have improved the utilization of waste lignocellulose components to produce biofuels, platform chemicals, resins, bioplastics, additives, and other biobased materials for diverse applications.

Screw extrusion pretreatment for high-yield lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNF) production from wood biomass and non-wood biomass

Hailong Lu et al.

Summary: This research develops a facile and low-cost process to produce high-yield lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNF) directly from wood and non-wood biomass. The LCNFs obtained from different raw materials exhibit excellent morphological, thermochemical, and mechanical properties. The LCNFs show high thermal stability and tensile strength, making them suitable for industrial production of bio-based nanofilms.

Year-Round Storage Operation of Three Major Agricultural Crop Residue Biomasses by Performing Dry Acid Pretreatment at Regional Collection Depots

Tao Han et al.

Summary: This study investigated the year-round storage of agricultural crop residue feedstock using dry acid pretreatment method at distributed regional collection depots. The results showed that the pretreated crop residues were well preserved with minimal loss and maintained consistent physical properties, chemical compositions, enzymatic hydrolysis yields, and ethanol fermentability. Dry acid pretreatment also significantly reduced transportation costs and provided an efficient logistic system for large-scale biorefinery plants.

Production of biogas from human faeces mixed with the co-substrate poultry litter & cow dung

Shubhra Singh et al.

Summary: The study shows that co-digestion of human faeces with cow dung produces higher biogas yield, possibly due to maximum COD reduction, optimum C/N ratio, and faster bacterial activity on cow dung. However, pathogen inactivation remains inefficient after anaerobic digestion.
