Blending of Hydrothermal Liquefaction Biocrude with Residual Marine Fuel: An Experimental Assessment

Andrea Maria Rizzo et al.

Summary: Similar to the aviation industry, the maritime sector is undergoing a significant transition towards achieving net zero emissions. In the short to medium term, the use of sustainable fuels is the most relevant option due to the challenges of shifting to electric power. To facilitate large-scale deployment, research is needed to understand the behavior of biofuels and fossil-based fuels when blended together, particularly for low quality products like HTL and fast pyrolysis oils. The study found that a blend of subcritical hydrothermal liquefaction biocrude with residual marine fuel resulted in different dissolution characteristics depending on the blend composition.

Strategies to achieve a carbon neutral society: a review

Lin Chen et al.

Summary: The increasing global industrialization and over-exploitation of fossil fuels have resulted in higher greenhouse gas emissions, leading to rising global temperatures and environmental issues. Achieving net-zero carbon emissions requires a comprehensive approach involving renewable energy transition, development of negative emissions technologies, implementation of carbon trading and carbon tax, as well as changes in dietary habits, low-carbon agriculture, and improving waste management. It is also crucial to build resilient buildings and cities, adopt decentralized energy systems, and electrify the transportation sector.

Derivatizing of Fast Pyrolysis Bio-Oil and Coprocessing in Fixed Bed Hydrotreater

Tomasz Janosik et al.

Summary: Forest-based biofuels are being developed and deployed in several countries. The use of fast pyrolysis bio-oil, produced from sawdust for example, has been tested in commercial trials by co-processing it in refinery units. However, current application is limited to about 10% of the total feed, and additional processing is necessary to maximize the potential of this feedstock. Different methods have been developed in the past decade to address the challenges in stabilizing and upgrading fast pyrolysis bio-oil. Another approach involves complete dewatering of the bio-oil using azeotropic distillation, followed by conversion of hydroxyl compounds via esterification methodology using renewable tall oil fatty acids.

The European forest carbon budget under future climate conditions and current management practices

Roberto Pilli et al.

Summary: To achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, additional efforts are needed to increase the net carbon sink from forests in the European Union. This requires considering the interactions between age-class distributions, forest management practices, and future climate change. A hybrid modeling approach combining land-climate models and an empirical forest growth model was used to quantify the impact of climate change and forest management on the long-term evolution of the EU forest carbon budget. The results show the importance of both management practices and climate change in determining the carbon sink.

Fractional distillation of algae based hydrothermal liquefaction biocrude for co-processing: changes in the properties, storage stability, and miscibility with diesel

Alireza Taghipour et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that fractional distillation is an effective method for upgrading algae-based biocrude by reducing heteroatoms content, improving physical properties and stability, making it suitable for co-processing or as a drop-in fuel. Furthermore, fractional distillation significantly reduced nitrogen, sulphur, and oxygen content in the biocrude fractions, enhancing the potential applications in diesel engines. Stability tests also showed that distillate fractions were far more stable in terms of chemical structure, viscosity, and higher heating value, indicating the feasibility of co-processing.
