An Enigmatic Stramenopile Sheds Light on Early Evolution in Ochrophyta Plastid Organellogenesis

Tomonori Azuma et al.

Summary: This study reveals the close relationship between the eukaryvorous protist Actinophrys sol and Ochrophyta through phylogenomic analysis. The absence of plastid genome and biosynthesis in Actinophrys sol suggests that the last common ancestor of Actinophryidae and Ochrophyta had not fully established a host-plastid partnership. However, gene transfer of algal genes from Ochrophyta to Actinophrys sol has occurred.

Monophyly of diverse Bigyromonadea and their impact on phylogenomic relationships within stramenopiles

Anna Cho et al.

Summary: Stramenopiles are a well-studied eukaryotic supergroup, but the relationships between major subgroups, such as Bigyromonadea, remain unresolved. By analyzing transcriptomes from seven new bigyromonad species, this study reveals the diversity of Bigyromonadea and suggests that they are most likely monophyletic with oomycetes.

Microbial predators form a new supergroup of eukaryotes

Denis V. V. Tikhonenkov et al.

Summary: The molecular phylogenetics of microbial eukaryotes has led to the establishment of new taxonomic divisions, superseding traditional kingdoms and revealing a much broader diversity. The discovery of a new supergroup of eukaryotes, Provora, through isolated culture, underscores the importance of exploring eukaryotic diversity through traditional methods in the age of high-throughput analyses. These predators, Nebulidia and Nibbleridia, are globally distributed and distinct from other eukaryotes in genetics, morphology, and behavior.

Global patterns and rates of habitat transitions across the eukaryotic tree of life

Mahwash Jamy et al.

Summary: Successful colonization of new habitats plays a significant role in the evolution of life. The salt barrier is a strong obstacle for organisms to cross, leading to the evolution of distinct marine and non-marine communities. This study investigates the evolution of habitats across the tree of eukaryotes, revealing that marine and non-marine microbial communities are phylogenetically distinct but have experienced transitions in both directions in all major eukaryotic lineages, with fungi being particularly affected. These findings highlight the importance of the salt barrier in eukaryote evolution.

Comparative genomics reveals new functional insights in uncultured MAST species

Aurelie Labarre et al.

Summary: The study utilized single-cell genomics to analyze the genomes of 15 MAST species from marine surface plankton, revealing their potential for phagocytosis and ability to thrive in the photic ocean with the presence of rhodopsin genes. The complexity of phagocytosis machinery in microbial eukaryotes was highlighted, contrasting with the well-defined set of genes for photosynthesis, providing essential insights into the ecophysiology of uncultured species and the function of rhodopsins in stramenopiles.

Olisthodiscus represents a new class of Ochrophyta

Dovile Barcyte et al.

Summary: Olisthodiscus represents a novel phylogenetically distinct ochrophyte lineage, with a plastid genome containing unique genes inherited from the rhodophyte ancestor and possessing a unique plastidial sulfate transporter SulT. Additionally, it is the only known ochrophyte with a cemA gene in its plastid genome, and phylogenetic analysis has ruled out the hypothesis of horizontal cemA transfer from a green algal plastid into Synurales.

Summary: Recent studies revealed underestimated diversity of microbial eukaryotes in hypersaline environments; Placidids, found in such environments, are a group of important heterotrophic stramenopile flagellates; Research on new genera Allegra, Haloplacidia, and Placilonga identified nine new species, expanding the known diversity of Placididea.

Six-State Amino Acid Recoding is not an Effective Strategy to Offset Compositional Heterogeneity and Saturation in Phylogenetic Analyses

Alexandra M. Hernandez et al.

Summary: The study tested the effectiveness of six-state amino acid recoding strategies and found that they are not effective under high saturation, with the loss of information outweighing the benefits. In contrast, recoding schemes with more states consistently outperformed the six-state recoding approach in analyses.

High and specific diversity of protists in the deep-sea basins dominated by diplonemids, kinetoplastids, ciliates and foraminiferans

Alexandra Schoenle et al.

Summary: The research shows that deep-sea heterotrophic protists play a crucial role in the ecosystem, with species richness surpassing that of other trophic levels and displaying differences from pelagic protists. Additionally, deep-sea protist communities are highly specific and represent one of the most diverse biodiversity compartments in the Earth system.
