Effect of Arch Height Flexibility in Individuals With Flatfoot on Abductor Hallucis Muscle Activity and Medial Longitudinal Arch Angle During Short Foot Exercises

Haruki Ishiyama et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effectiveness of short foot exercise (SFE) in individuals with different types of flatfoot. The results showed that individuals with high arch height flexibility (AHF) had increased abductor hallucis muscle (AbH) activity during SFE, suggesting that SFE may be more effective for this type of flatfoot.

Comparison of EMG activity in shank muscles between individuals with and without chronic ankle instability when running on a treadmill

Abdulkerim Darendeli et al.

Summary: Changes in movement capabilities after an ankle injury may lead to adaptations in the peripheral and central nervous system. This study compared the electromyogram (EMG) profile of ankle stabilizer muscles and stride-time variation during treadmill running in individuals with and without chronic ankle instability (CAI). The results indicate that individuals with CAI exhibit altered activation strategies for ankle stabilizer muscles and greater stride-time variability when running on a treadmill.

Plantar intrinsic foot muscle activation during functional exercises compared to isolated foot exercises in younger adults

Lydia Willemse et al.

Summary: This study compared the activation of plantar intrinsic foot muscles (PIFMs) between functional exercises and isolated foot exercises. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the activation of PIFMs between the two types of exercises. This finding suggests further research is needed to investigate the effectiveness of functional exercises in physical therapy.

Functional relationship between the foot intrinsic and extrinsic muscles in walking

Hiroshi Akuzawa et al.

Summary: This study aimed to clarify the functional relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic muscles during walking. It was found that the onset time of the intrinsic muscles was earlier than that of the extrinsic muscles, and in the late propulsion phase, the activity of the extrinsic muscles decreased while the intrinsic muscles remained active. This suggests that the intrinsic muscles play an important role in stabilizing the foot and contributing to propulsion during walking.

Running gait biomechanics in females with chronic ankle instability and ankle sprain copers

Rachel M. Koldenhoven et al.

Summary: Limited evidence exists comparing running biomechanics between individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI) and those who fully recover (copers). This study found that the CAI group showed increased ankle inversion during running, potentially increasing the risk of injury.

Coper has altered foot joint coordination pattern compared to individuals with chronic ankle instability during running

Takahiro Watanabe et al.

Summary: This study assesses the coordination and coordination variability of different foot segments in individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI) and copers. The results suggest that copers exhibit a specific movement pattern during late stance and early stance that may reduce the risk of ankle sprains.

A novel kinematic detection of foot-strike and toe-off events during noninstrumented treadmill running to estimate contact time

Aurelien Patoz et al.

Summary: A novel kinematic algorithm (KA) using heel and toe kinematics was proposed to detect foot-strike and toe-off events during running. The study found that this KA showed smaller errors compared to existing methods when estimating foot-strike, toe-off, and contact time, even across different speeds and foot-strike angles.

Anatomical risk factors of lateral ankle sprain in adolescent athletes: A prospective cohort study

Farzaneh Saki et al.

Summary: This prospective cohort study identified factors associated with an increased risk of lateral ankle sprain (LAS) in adolescent male athletes participating in team sports. Previous ankle sprain history, increased navicular drop, and knee recurvatum were positively associated with LAS incidence. Therapists and trainers can use this data to identify individuals with a higher risk of LAS.
