Future changes in urban drainage pressure caused by precipitation extremes in 285 cities across China based on CMIP6 models

Pin Wang et al.

Summary: The high pressure on urban drainage systems caused by extreme precipitation events results in an increased risk of urban floods. Future changes in urban drainage pressure in China under different climate scenarios have been assessed, and measures such as enhancing retention capacity and pipe enlargement adaptation have been proposed to mitigate the pressure.

Avoidable heat-related mortality in China during the 21st century

Guwei Zhang et al.

Summary: Using mortality records and model simulations, we assessed the impact of emission reduction on heat-related deaths in China. The study found that without human-induced climate change, heat-related mortality would decrease significantly. Reducing emissions could potentially avoid thousands of heat-related deaths per year. The study also highlights the importance of considering population changes and adjusting population structure in minimizing the health impacts of warming.

Projections of future temperature-related cardiovascular mortality under climate change, urbanization and population aging in Beijing, China

ZhaoBin Sun et al.

Summary: Climate change, urbanization, and population aging pose potential threats to the health and survival of residents. This study examines the effects of temperature, urbanization, and population aging on future cardiovascular disease mortality. The findings indicate that improving urbanization can decrease mortality, while increased aging can increase mortality. Aging is identified as the biggest challenge in addressing climate change. Therefore, it is important to continue urbanization efforts to reduce health risks and improve healthcare and resource allocation to adapt to climate change.

Sensitivities of heat-wave mortality projections: Moving towards stochastic model assumptions

Luis M. Abadie et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the probabilistic future behavior of heat-waves in Madrid in the 21st century, using a range of climate models and combining with an epidemiological model. Results show that relying on a single climate model for extreme scenarios may lead to substantial deviations in estimates.

Patch-Based Local Climate Zones Mapping and Population Distribution Pattern in Provincial Capital Cities of China

Liang Zhou et al.

Summary: This study presents a patch-based classification framework using chessboard segmentation and multi-seasonal images for LCZ mapping, and constructs a high-quality sample dataset. Compared with existing methods, our framework improves the accuracy by approximately 10% and 9% for overall LCZ types and urban LCZ types, respectively. Additionally, the analysis of population distribution reveals a hierarchical effect of population density among different built-up LCZs in cities of different sizes.

Increasing heat risk in China's urban agglomerations

Guwei Zhang et al.

Summary: The study predicts a sharp increase in heat danger days in Chinese urban agglomerations during periods of population explosion, with approximately one-third of the population facing three or more heat danger days annually. In the coming decades, the heat risk is expected to significantly increase, especially under high emission pathways, highlighting the need to develop strategic plans to reduce heat risk.
