Futures of artificial intelligence through technology readiness levels

Fernando Martinez-Plumed et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel exemplar-based methodology for categorising and assessing AI technologies by mapping them onto different Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) and generality dimensions. The readiness-vs-generality charts show that higher TRLs are achievable for low-generality technologies, while high TRLs are still out of reach for more general capabilities. By examining the timelines of various AI technology exemplars at different generality layers, short-term and mid-term trends for AI can be forecasted.
