Biological Control of Plant Pathogens: A Global Perspective

Rachid Lahlali et al.

Summary: The increase in world population has resulted in higher demands for agricultural products. However, the use of chemical pesticides has caused concerns over their impact on human health and the environment. As a result, researchers have turned to biological controls using beneficial microorganisms, but the development of biofungicides has faced challenges. This review focuses on the gap between the screening of biological control agents and the availability of marketed products, and highlights the obstacles in terms of efficacy and legislation procedures.

Insecticidal activity of Bacillus thuringiensis Cry1, Cry2 and Vip3 toxin combinations in Spodoptera exigua control: highlights on synergism and data scoring

Jakub Baranek et al.

Summary: Bioinsecticides based on Bacillus thuringiensis toxins can be a safe alternative to chemical pesticides for controlling pests like Spodoptera exigua. Research shows synergistic interactions between certain Bt toxins, enhancing their insecticidal activity against S. exigua. Results indicate the potential for developing new bioinsecticides with high effectiveness against this pest species, but the timing of data collection may influence the estimation of interaction type.

Nutrient conditions determine the localization of Bacillus thuringiensis Vip3Aa protein in the mother cell compartment

Zeyu Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the secretion and location of the Vip3Aa protein in different growth conditions of Bt strains, revealing its nutrient-dependent secretion and partial secretion in rich medium. Despite being retained in the mother cell compartment under sporulation conditions, Vip3Aa exhibited high toxicity against Spodoptera frugiperda larvae, suggesting that this accumulation strategy could be efficient for industrial production in commercial Bt strains.
