Virulence and antibiotic-resistance genes in Enterococcus faecalis associated with streptococcosis disease in fish

Tasmina Akter et al.

Summary: A whole-genome sequence study was conducted on three fish pathogenic E. faecalis to investigate the virulence factor and antibiotic-resistance genes. The study found that all three strains conserved 69 virulence factors and 39 antibiotic-resistance genes, including genes related to gelatinase toxin, biofilm synthesis, and capsule production. Phylogenetic analysis showed that two strains formed a different cluster compared to the third strain. This study provides new insights into the pathogenicity of E. faecalis in fish.

Genomic analysis of antibiotic-resistant Enterococcus spp. reveals novel enterococci strains and the spread of plasmid-borne Tet(M), Tet(L) and Erm (B) genes from chicken litter to agricultural soil in South Africa

Dorcas Oladayo Fatoba et al.

Summary: The study revealed that bacteria in chicken litter carry various resistance genes, which are introduced into the soil through the application of chicken litter, leading to the emergence of new resistance genes in the soil. These resistance genes are associated with diverse mobile genetic elements, indicating the mobilization and transmission of resistance genes and resistant bacteria.

Mode and dynamics of vanA-type vancomycin resistance dissemination in Dutch hospitals

Sergio Arredondo-Alonso et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively investigated the genomic epidemiology of 309 vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium isolates in 32 Dutch hospitals from 2012 to 2015. The dissemination of the vanA gene cluster in related VRE cases in Dutch hospitals during this period was primarily attributed to clonal spread. However, outbreaks with high frequencies of plasmid dissemination were also identified, indicating that resistance spread was mainly driven by horizontal gene transfer (HGT).

The Role of Whole Genome Sequencing in the Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistant Enterococcus spp.: A Scoping Review

Lindsay A. Rogers et al.

Summary: Enterococcus spp. have emerged as significant nosocomial pathogens and carry various antimicrobial resistance genes. The use of whole genome sequencing in surveillance has been shown to enhance our understanding of antimicrobial resistance in Enterococcus spp. Studies emphasize the importance of ongoing surveillance of enterococci from a One Health perspective.

Emergence and Transmission of Daptomycin and Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci Between Patients and Hospital Rooms

Lynn El Haddad et al.

Summary: The study successfully identified transmission networks of VRE strains between patients and their rooms using whole genome sequencing and phylogenetic analyses. Highly genetically related strains were observed to be transmitted between patients and their rooms in a short period of time. The research found horizontal transmission of highly drug-resistant VRE strains between HCT and LKM patients and their room environments.
