Stayability in Simmental cattle as affected by muscularity and body condition score between calvings

Giovanni Buonaiuto et al.

Summary: The present study aimed to investigate the association between stayability traits, muscularity, and body condition score (BCS) in Italian Simmental dual-purpose cows. The results showed that cows with a medium BCS and muscularity in early lactation had a higher likelihood of staying in the herd compared to thinner ones. However, cows with high muscularity were less likely to start the third lactation, indicating a potential preference for market cows with good conformation for meat purpose. This study highlights the importance of muscularity and BCS early in life for the stayability of Simmental cows.

Analyses of Genetic Diversity in the Endangered Berrenda Spanish Cattle Breeds Using Pedigree Data

Rafael Gonzalez-Cano et al.

Summary: The two berrenda cattle breeds are important for the conservation of livestock genetic diversity in Spain. This study analyzed the pedigrees of these breeds and found that they retain a high level of genetic variability. The study suggests promoting the conservation of genetic variability through exchange of breeding animals.

A review of inbreeding depression in dairy cattle: current status, emerging control strategies, and future prospects

Miguel A. Gutierrez-Reinoso et al.

Summary: The issue of inbreeding in dairy cattle breeding has raised concerns due to its negative impact on genetic diversity. Researchers suggest that the benefits and limitations of inbreeding should be evaluated to maintain genetic variability when selecting individuals for reproduction and production. Current breeding programs have negatively affected the fertility potential of dairy cattle in the long term, leading to higher costs and reduced genetic diversity. Therefore, a deeper understanding of the potential of breeding programs to support genetic sustainability and diversity in dairy cattle populations is crucial for managing farm profitability.

Application of a Bio-Economic Model to Demonstrate the Importance of Health Traits in Herd Management of Lithuanian Dairy Breeds

Sarune Marasinskien et al.

Summary: This study calculated the economic values and assessed the importance of health traits for three dairy cattle breeds in Lithuania using a stochastic bio-economic model. The results highlight the significant economic importance of health traits in cattle herd selection and management.

The application of Legendre Polynomials to model muscularity and body condition score in primiparous Italian Simmental cattle

Giovanni Buonaiuto et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to develop a model to predict muscularity and body condition score (BCS) during lactation in Italian Simmental dairy cows. The results showed that the nadir of BCS was earlier than that of muscularity, and both BCS and muscularity recovered to post-partum levels after the lactation peak. Furthermore, late-gestating cows could potentially experience a phase of body conformation loss.

16 Years of breed management brings substantial improvement in population genetics of the endangered Cleveland Bay Horse

Andrew Dell et al.

Summary: The text highlights the importance of genetic resource management in animal populations, and the successful application of a population management tool based on relatedness assessment in a closed equine population native to the UK, resulting in a reduction in inbreeding rate and an increase in the genetic resource size within the breed.

Pedigree analysis in the Polish Red cattle population

O. Jarnecka et al.

Summary: This study described the population structure and inbreeding level of Polish Red Cattle (PRC), with an average inbreeding of 4% and 23.8% inbred animals. The results indicate the potential disruption of the balance in small populations like PRC, highlighting the need for continuous monitoring of endangered populations.
