Characterisation of the surface chemistry of carbon materials by temperature-programmed desorption: An assessment

Raquel P. Rocha et al.

Summary: The use of carbon materials in technology relies heavily on a thorough understanding of carbon surface chemistry, which can be achieved through reliable analysis methods. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) techniques provide qualitative and quantitative information about functional groups on carbon surfaces. TPD, in particular, is a suitable alternative method for characterizing oxygen functional groups on carbon materials with extended porosity, surpassing the limitations of the Boehm titration methodology or XPS. This review discusses the fundamentals and methodology of TPD-MS analysis for accurately assessing oxygenated functional groups, as well as the applicability of TPD data in correlating carbon material properties with practical performance.

The mechanism and sorption kinetic analysis of hydrogen storage at room temperature using acid functionalized carbon nanotubes

Syedvali Pinjari et al.

Summary: The effect of acid functionalization of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on hydrogen storage at room temperature was investigated. Functionalized CNT samples were synthesized and characterized, and hydrogen storage measurements were conducted. Acid functionalization led to significant changes in the physicochemical properties of the CNTs due to varying oxygen functional group concentrations. The H2SO4:HNO3 functionalized sample at 100 degrees C showed the highest interlayer spacing, oxygen to carbon ratio, defect content, and specific surface area. These features contributed to a substantial improvement in hydrogen storage capacity, with a 150% increase at 298 K and 50 bar. Kinetic analysis revealed a multiple diffusion process for desorption, controlled by oxygen functional groups and structural defects, while adsorption followed a more rapid, three-dimensional diffusion process.

Exploring Nitrogen-Functionalized Graphene Composites for Urinary Catheter Applications

Rita Teixeira-Santos et al.

Summary: Graphene nanoplatelet (GNP)-based composites as coatings for urinary catheters (UCs) were investigated for their antibiofilm efficacy. The composite showed inhibitory effects on the development of biofilms of various bacteria, and influenced the structure of the biofilm. Moreover, the functionalized GNP caused changes in membrane permeability and triggered reactive oxygen species synthesis in Staphylococcus aureus, whereas in Gram-negative bacteria, it only induced changes in cell metabolism. This suggests the potential of GNP-based composites as coatings for UCs.

Diamine Oxidase-Conjugated Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes to Facilitate Electrode Surface Homogeneity

M. Amin et al.

Summary: Carbon nanomaterials have significant potential in electrochemistry, but their limited dispersion has hindered their use. This study demonstrates the improvement of multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) dispersion through the addition of an enzyme, which also enhances stability. The modified MWCNT-functionalized electrode shows increased roughness and wettability, and analysis confirms the presence of carboxylated MWCNT variants. This development may enable the creation of biosensors for various healthcare applications.

Colonization and Infection of Indwelling Medical Devices by Staphylococcus aureus with an Emphasis on Orthopedic Implants

Giampiero Pietrocola et al.

Summary: The use of indwelling medical devices has increased in recent years, improving the quality of life for patients. However, implant-associated infections, especially in orthopedic surgery, remain a common and serious complication. Staphylococcus aureus is the main cause of biomaterial-centered infections, forming biofilms that enable the bacteria to evade antimicrobial activity and the immune response. Understanding the mechanisms of biofilm formation and developing innovative anti-biofilm approaches are crucial for treating biomaterial-associated infections.

Antimicrobial and anti-adhesive properties of carbon nanotube-based surfaces for medical applications: a systematic review

Rita Teixeira-Santos et al.

Summary: The study found that surfaces containing modified CNTs, especially CNTs conjugated with different polymers, exhibited strong antimicrobial and anti-adhesive properties, protecting cells from protein adsorption. However, due to the unresolved toxicity of CNTs on the human body, they cannot yet compete with traditional strategies in fighting biofilms. This review may be helpful for the development of new engineered medical surfaces.
