Defining bilingualism in infancy and toddlerhood: A scoping review

Joscelin Rocha-Hidalgo et al.

Summary: This manuscript aims to provide an overview of the population, languages, methods, and practices surrounding the definition of bilingualism in children below age 3. The findings show that the samples studied were predominantly from Western regions and that percent exposure was the most common method to measure bilingualism among infants and young children. The study also highlights the importance of uniform definitions in the field to predict the likelihood of reporting significant differences between monolinguals and bilinguals.

Are translation equivalents special? Evidence from simulations and empirical data from bilingual infants

Rachel Ka-Ying Tsui et al.

Summary: This study examines three different explanations for bilingual children's acquisition of translation equivalents and validates the model predictions using actual data from French-English bilingual children. The results show a close match between the model predictions and the patterns of translation equivalent learning in bilingual children, suggesting a predictable emergence of these patterns during the word learning process.
