Mortgage regulation as a quick fix for the financial crisis: standardised lending and risky borrowing in Canada and the Netherlands

Dolly Loomans et al.

Summary: This article examines the state interventions in regulating mortgage markets in Canada and the Netherlands during and after the crisis. The analysis reveals that these interventions aimed at restoring the investment value of mortgage products but failed to separate housing from global speculative financial practices. The new regulations further excluded low-income households from mortgage markets and increased risks for households with access to mortgages.

Governance Networks and Accountability Patterns in the Provision of Housing for Migrants: The Case of Central and Eastern European Workers in the Netherlands

Ids Baalbergen et al.

Summary: This study examines the housing issue among migrant workers from a governance network perspective. The analysis of policy documents and interviews with stakeholders reveals the complexities of decision-making due to unclear institutional accountability patterns and diverging strategic interests. The interplay between the loosely defined institutional structure and varying interests has resulted in a policy impasse. Reconsideration of existing accountability patterns is necessary to alleviate sub-standard housing conditions among migrant workers in the Netherlands.

Rethinking lifestyle and middle-class migration in left behind regions

Bryonny Goodwin-Hawkins et al.

Summary: This study examines the phenomenon of middle-class lifestyles in so-called left behind regions, where some middle-class migrants find opportunities to affordably enact their aspirations. The research demonstrates how spatial inequalities and career trade-offs provide affordable material access to lifestyle in these peripheral areas, while middle-class aspirations enable migrants to subjectively transform peripherality into enchantment.

Trajectories of Spatial Assimilation or Place Stratification? A Typology of Residence and Workplace Histories of Newly Arrived Migrants in Sweden

Guilherme Kenji Chihaya et al.

Summary: In most societies, resources and opportunities are concentrated in neighborhoods and workplaces occupied by the host population. The theories of spatial assimilation and place stratification propose trajectories leading to minority and migrant access or exclusion from these advantageous places. However, previous research did not investigate whether these theorized trajectories actually occur. Through sequence analysis of decade-long residence and workplace histories of newly arrived migrants in Sweden, this study identifies seven types of combined residence-work trajectories. The findings suggest that migrant employment does not precede residence alongside the host population, and migrants from less affluent countries accumulate disadvantage over time, likely due to discrimination in both the labor and housing markets.

Housing trajectories of EU migrants: between quick emigration and shared housing as temporary and long-term solutions

Dorien Manting et al.

Summary: This article examines the housing trajectories of EU migrants from seven countries in the Netherlands over an eight-year period using sequence analyses and logistic regression. The results show that sharing is a central issue for all migrant groups, both as a temporary and long-term solution. The varying housing trajectories can be partially explained by contrasting demographic and socio-economic profiles, even after controlling for factors such as income, age, and household composition. However, some differences between country of origin persist.

Magdalena Ulceluse et al.

Summary: This article explores how the location, function and quality of immigrant accommodation facilities, regulated by local housing policies, have a significant impact on the perceived effects of immigration on the well-being of residents and immigrants in three villages in the Netherlands. Protracted precarities: The residential mobilities of Poles in Scotland

David McCollum et al.

Summary: The significant influx of migrants to the United Kingdom after the 2004 Eastern EU Enlargement, particularly Polish migrants, has led to persistent residential relocations due to the cycle of low paid and insecure employment they often find themselves in. This highlights broader discussions on the dichotomy between international and internal migration, labor market changes, and social inequalities.

Being far away from what you need: the impact of dispersal on resettled refugees' homemaking and place attachment in small to medium-sized towns in the Netherlands

Ilse van Liempt et al.

Summary: This article examines the processes of homemaking and place attachment of Syrian refugees resettled in small to medium-sized towns in the Netherlands through semi-structured interviews. It investigates the constraints and opportunities experienced by resettled refugees in their everyday lives, and explores how they become part of the community after being dispersed upon arrival. Specifically, it looks at the challenges faced by resettled refugees identified as exceptionally vulnerable when transitioning into an integration system heavily reliant on refugees using their own agency.

On the move again? Residential trajectories of refugees after obtaining asylum in the Netherlands

Marloes de Hoon et al.

Summary: The study found that refugees' residential trajectories in the Netherlands are related to their household situation, with significant variations across origin groups. Around half of refugees who stayed in the Netherlands did not leave their allocated municipality in the private housing trajectory, while those allocated to rural municipalities mostly relocated over time. Social networks and transitions to home ownership were associated with rural to urban movement among refugees.
