Legal Abuse and Mental Health: The Role of Judicial Betrayal

Summary: When mothers who have survived intimate partner violence seek help from family court after separating from their abusive partners, they often face ongoing legal abuse. Abusers use court processes to exert coercive control and judges may fail to prevent such harm. This study explored the relationship between legal abuse, mental health, and judicial betrayal. Results showed that legal abuse was associated with elevated symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder and depression, and this relationship was mediated by judicial betrayal.
