Experimental and Computational Fluid Dynamics Investigation of Mechanisms of Enhanced Oil Recovery via Nanoparticle-Surfactant Solutions

Nurudeen Yekeen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), silicon dioxide (SiO2), and aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nanoparticles on the enhanced oil recovery (EOR) properties of a conventional surfactant (sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate, SDBS). The results showed that adding nanoparticles to SDBS solutions reduced the fingering and channeling effect, and increased the oil recovery factor. The study highlights the importance of the nanoparticle-surfactant EOR mechanisms.

Two-dimensional numerical modelling of viscous emulsion drops coalescence in a constricted capillary channel

Bacha Munir et al.

Summary: In this study, we numerically investigated the coalescence of viscous emulsion drops in a two-dimensional semi-elliptical shape constricted channel using the finite element method. The effects of interfacial tension, inertia, viscosity ratio, droplet size, and constriction shape on droplet coalescence and average viscous pressure drop were examined. It was found that high interfacial tension led to faster droplet approach and coalescence at the constriction entrance, resulting in higher pressure drops. Inertia had negligible effects on droplet coalescence, with higher inertia causing less viscous pressure drop. Lower viscosity drops exhibited quicker coalescence compared to higher viscosity drops, while larger droplets and circular constrictions had a greater impact on droplet coalescence and viscous pressure drop.

Rheological behavior and microstructural properties of crude oil and emulsions (water/oil-oil/water)

Celia Yacine et al.

Summary: An experimental study was conducted on crude oil from the Tin Fouye Tabankort oil field in southern Algeria to investigate its rheological behavior and phase inversion with different emulsions under temperature variations. Rheological characteristics were measured by flow and dynamic mode tests at different temperatures (10°C-50°C) and water concentrations (20%, 40%, 50%, 60%, and 70%) at a fixed temperature of 20°C. Results showed a 31.84% reduction in initial viscosity with increasing temperature and an increase in viscosity at the point of phase inversion due to water addition. The crude oil and emulsions exhibited non-Newtonian behavior with shear thinning. Dynamic analysis varied with temperature and water percentage. Microscopic analysis confirmed the relationship between water droplet shape, diameter, and viscosity variation.

Experimental and numerical analysis of the emulsification of oil droplets in water with high frequency focused ultrasound

Idowu Adeyemi et al.

Summary: Focused high frequency ultrasound emulsification provides significant benefits in terms of stability, droplet size, pressure, power usage, surfactant usage and dispersion. This study investigates the emulsification of oil droplets in water using high frequency focused ultrasound through experiments and numerical modeling. The effects of transducer power, frequency, oil viscosity, interfacial tension and initial droplet radius on the emulsification process were assessed. The experiments show that the acoustic pressure and Weber number increase with power. The numerical model gives reasonable predictions of the experimental data. Smaller droplets can be achieved at higher frequency excitation. The viscosity and droplet radius also influence the emulsification process.

Numerical analysis on drop-drop electrocoalescence behavior under different electric field parameters

Zhiqian Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the coalescence behavior of water droplets in water-in-oil emulsions under different electric field parameters. The results showed that the coalescence effect was more significant at certain electric field frequencies, intensities, and waveforms. The deformation degree and electric field intensity at the beginning of coalescence had a significant influence on the coalescence velocity.

Simulation of drop motion and breakup in narrow pores

Rocio Navarro et al.

Summary: The simulation of drops passing through narrow pores using a boundary-integral algorithm shows that there are three possible outcomes: passage without breaking, breakup due to contact with a bifurcation or corner, and breakup due to elongation. Factors such as drop size, capillary number, viscosity, and pore geometry play a role in determining which outcome occurs.
