Update of the Xylella spp. host plant database - systematic literature search up to 30 June 2021

Alice Delbianco et al.

Summary: Following a request from the European Commission, EFSA has created and regularly updates a database of host plant species of Xylella spp. The latest version of the database includes 19 new host plants and additional information on the tolerant/resistant response of plant species to X. fastidiosa infection. No new STs have been identified compared to the previous update. The overall number of Xylella spp. host plants now reaches 407 plant species, 185 genera, and 68 families.

Transmission of Xylella fastidiosa subsp. pauca ST53 by the Sharpshooter Cicadella viridis From Different Source Plants and Artificial Diets

Nicola Bodino et al.

Summary: This study shows that the sharpshooter Cicadella viridis has a low transmission rate of Xylella fastidiosa and its ecological constraints make it difficult to play a significant role in spreading the exotic bacterium within Europe.

Xylella fastidiosa in Europe: From the Introduction to the Current Status

Vojislav Trkulja et al.

Summary: Xylella fastidiosa is a bacterium that infects a wide range of host plants and has caused diseases in grapes, citrus, olives, peaches, plums, alfalfa, and other plants. It has spread to several European countries since its first outbreak in Italy in 2013. Currently, there are 174 confirmed hosts in Europe, with 25 newly identified in 2021. Four subspecies of X. fastidiosa have been found in European countries, and several vector species have been identified. Control measures for X. fastidiosa include using disease-free plant material, eradication efforts, territory demarcation, vector control, and resistant plant cultivars.

Landscape Epidemiology of Xylella fastidiosa in the Balearic Islands

Diego Olmo et al.

Summary: Xf, a vascular plant pathogen native to the Americas, was first identified in Europe in 2013, causing massive die-off of olive trees in Italy. The Balearic Islands in Spain have the major known genetic diversity of Xf in Europe. Since 2016, four sequence types of Xf have been identified infecting 28 host species.

Seasonal Appearance, Abundance, and Host Preference of Philaenus spumarius and Neophilaenus campestris (Hemiptera: Aphrophoridae in Olive Groves in Greece

Spyridon Antonatos et al.

Summary: Xylella fastidiosa is a xylem inhabiting bacterium exclusively transmitted by xylem sap feeding insects. A survey conducted in olive groves in Greece revealed that spittlebug nymphs showed a preference for certain plant families, while adult spittlebugs appeared in spring and autumn to early winter each year. The findings shed light on the biology and ecology of these insects under Mediterranean climate.

Ground Cover Management in Olive Groves Reduces Populations of Philaenus spumarius (Hemiptera: Aphrophoridae), Vector of Xylella fastidiosa

Francesco Sanna et al.

Summary: The study compared the effectiveness of different ground cover management practices in controlling vector populations in olive groves in Central Italy. Tillage reduced Philaenus spumarius density by 60% in late spring, while frequent mowing only reduced it by 20% compared to the control plots. The treatments had the same effect on the vector density in both the ground vegetation and tree canopy, with vectors more concentrated in the ground cover at the beginning of the season.
