Landfill leachate treatment by hydroxyl and sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs)

Pericles Parthenidis et al.

Summary: One negative aspect of landfilling is the production of multicomponent dark liquids containing various chemical pollutants. Effective treatment methods like UV/Fe2+/H2O2 and UV/Fe2+/S2O82- processes are evaluated for degradation of landfill leachate. Factors such as [Fe2+]/[Oxidant] ratio, UV light, dosing mode, and pretreatment by a physicochemical process are examined for their influence. Best removal efficiencies for COD, TOC, and color index are achieved under specific operating conditions, with UV/Fe2+/S2O82- process showing better performance despite the influence of sulfate radical selectivity.

Micropollutants characteristics, fate, and sustainable removal technologies for landfill leachate: A technical perspective

Vinay Kumar et al.

Summary: Landfill waste disposal has become popular in recent decades due to its easy and cost-effective nature for managing waste. However, the heterogeneity of the waste makes it difficult to predict the fate of pollutants, making bio-monitoring and specific treatment challenging. One major issue associated with landfill treatment is leachate, which poses a greater risk of soil and groundwater pollution. The presence of diverse micropollutants in landfill leachates, including microbial pathogens, pesticides, microplastics, pharmaceuticals, and other harmful chemicals, calls for improved methods for their treatment and removal.

Homogeneous photocatalytic degradationof azo dye Reactive Black 5 using Fe(III) ions under visible light

Shailaja P. Sadhu et al.

Summary: Efficient and cost-effective method using homogeneous photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) with ferric ions (Fe(III)) under visible light (VL) and sunlight (SL) was studied for destroying Reactive Black 5 (RB5) dye. Fe(III)-induced homogeneous PCO appears to be a reliable and low-cost method of advanced oxidation without the need for costly reagents such as H2O2.

Revealing the enhancing mechanisms of Fe-Cu bimetallic catalysts for the Fenton-like degradation of phenol

Qixing Xia et al.

Summary: This study develops a dendritic Fe-Cu bimetallic catalyst (E100) that addresses the challenge of achieving desirable activity and reusability in heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts for environmental remediation. Compared to single metal catalysts, E100 demonstrates superior performance in the degradation of phenol, with Fe species being the dominant Fenton-like active centers under acidic pH and Cu species under neutral pH. The presence of a Cu/Fe3O4 shell accelerates Cu-based Fenton-like reactions through galvanic micro-cells effects, while the FeCu core further enhances Fe-based Fenton-like reactions. Overall, E100 exhibits superior catalytic activity and reusability, providing new insights for fabricating efficient Fenton-like catalysts.

Advanced treatment of landfill leachate through combined Anammox-based biotreatment, O3/H2O2 oxidation, and activated carbon adsorption: technical performance, surrogate-based control strategy, and operational cost analysis

Yongyuan Yang et al.

Summary: The complexity and dynamic characteristics of landfill leachate pose challenges for its treatment. A combined treatment process, including a one-stage partial nitrification-Anammox process, an O-3/H2O2 process, and a granular activated carbon filtration (GAC) process, was investigated. A surrogate-based ozone dose control strategy for the O-3/H2O2 process was evaluated. Results showed that this three-stage process achieved high removal rates of total nitrogen, COD, and micropollutants, satisfying discharge requirements. Real-time control of ozone dosing for COD removal was achieved through monitoring UVA(254) reduction. Cost analysis indicated that the combination of O-3/H2O2 and GAC as the main steps was more cost-effective in post-treatment. A dynamic operation strategy in response to leachate changes was recommended.

Sunlight mediated photo-Fenton degradation of tetracycline antibiotic and methylene blue dye in aqueous medium using FeWO4/Bi2MoO6 nanocomposite

Gandharve Kumar et al.

Summary: An optimized batch of 0.25FeWO(4)/Bi2MoO6 nanocomposites has been developed as an efficient solar photo Fenton catalyst for degradation of tetracycline antibiotic and methylene blue in an aqueous medium. The catalyst dose of 30 mg/50 mL spiked with 20 mu L of H2O2 (30% v/v) resulted in 97% degradation of tetracycline and 99% degradation of methylene blue within 90 min. The study confirms the significant enhancement of the photo-Fenton degradation of tetracycline and methylene blue by FeWO4/Bi2MoO6 nanocomposites compared to Bi2MoO6 photocatalyst. The role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the degradation process is confirmed through ROS scavenging studies.
