Alan P. Rodeck Loemba et al.

Summary: This study presents systematic analysis of petrography, geochemistry, and geochronology to understand the evolution of the NW Congo Craton in the Republic of Congo. The study areas show the presence of hornblende tonalite, biotite granodiorite, and granitic leucosome veins. The results provide insights into the formation age and tectonic setting of these rocks, as well as the crustal evolution in the region.

Late Neoarchean TTG and monzogranite in the northeastern North China Craton: Implications for partial melting of a thickened lower crust

Zhongshui Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the petrogenesis and tectonic implications of late Neoarchean TGGs and associated monzogranites. The results suggest that the TTGs were likely generated by partial melting of 2.9-2.7 Ga juvenile basalts, and the monzogranites may have been derived through the partial melting of thickened lower crust with heterogeneous sources. The Late Neoarchean thickened lower crust was the likely geodynamic setting for the formation of the TTGs and monzogranites.

A review of the genetic mechanisms generating igneous charnockite: CO2 flushing and crystal-melt segregation in mushy reservoirs

Kai Zhao et al.

Summary: Igneous charnockites are high-temperature orthopyroxene-bearing granitoids, and their preservation mechanisms and formation depend on extreme magmatic processes such as CO2 flushing or crystal-melt segregation. Two possible mechanisms for the preservation of magmatic orthopyroxene are highlighted: the importance of CO2 in reducing H2O activity and elevating the solidus temperature, and the extraction of hydrous melts from an orthopyroxene-bearing mush. The study of igneous charnockites is important for understanding carbon flux and continental crust differentiation.

Temporal variations in the incompatible trace element systematics of Archean TTGs: Implications for crustal growth and tectonic processes in the early Earth

Paul Sotiriou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the geochemical characteristics of Archean tonalites, trondhjemites, and granodiorites (TTGs) to understand their formation processes and the presence of modern-style plate tectonics in the early Earth. The results show that most Archean TTGs formed through partial melting of subducting oceanic crust or lower arc crust, while some resemble modern arc magmas. The study suggests that modern-style plate tectonic processes contributed significantly to the formation of Archean continental crust, dispelling the misconception that vertical tectonic processes predominated in the early Earth.

Combined bulk-rock Lu-Hf and Sm-Nd isotopic study of Archean granitoids and mafic rocks from Sangmelima terranes (Ntem Complex, south Cameroon): Geodynamic implications

Joseph Martial Akame et al.

Summary: Hafnium and neodymium isotopes are powerful tools for tracking the mechanisms of crustal generation and differentiation. In this study, the Hf and Nd isotopic analyses of Archean mafic and felsic igneous rocks from the Sangmelima terranes in southern Cameroon were conducted. The results show a subchondritic initial isotopic ratio for Mesoarchean charnockite and TTG suites, indicating the involvement of Eo-to Paleoarchean components in their petrogenesis. The study also reveals two episodes of mantle-derived mafic magmatism in the Ntem Complex during the Mesoarchean period.

Diversification of Archean tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite suites in a mushy middle crust

Jillian Kendrick et al.

Summary: Tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) suites are a debated component of Earth's first continents. We propose a new petrological-geochemical model that explains the coexistence of TTGs in the middle crust and suggests that their compositions are controlled by the separation of early-crystallizing plagioclase and melt.

Rongfeng Ge et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the Archean geological record of the Tarim Craton and proposes a new model for the formation and evolution of Archean continental crust. The study reveals that most Archean TTGs were formed by water-fluxed melting of thick proto-arcs built on thick Archean oceanic crust, while rare high-pressure TTGs were formed by water-fluxed melting of subducted arcs during intermittent subduction and arc accretion.

Testing the importance of sagduction: insights from the Lewisian Gneiss Complex of northwest Scotland

Sophie R. Miocevich et al.

Summary: This study challenges the theory of sagduction as an important process in the Archean tectonic evolution, based on an analysis of the Lewisian Gneiss Complex. The research suggests that the observed subordinate lithologies within the felsic mid-crust were not emplaced through sagduction, but rather through uniformitarian tectonic interpretations.

Summary: This study applies deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) and transfer learning to classify different types of zircons. An atlas with over 4000 cathodoluminescence (CL) images of zircons is created, and three DCNNs are trained using these images. The results demonstrate the high accuracy of DCNNs in zircon classification and show the great potential of deep learning techniques in geoscientific research.

Onset of plate tectonics by the Eoarchean

Brian F. Windley et al.

Summary: The paper presents evidence suggesting that plate tectonics was already in operation during the Eoarchean period around 4.0 billion years ago. It highlights the presence of two types of plate tectonics - Accretionary Cycle Plate Tectonics and Wilson Cycle Plate Tectonics in the early Earth, leading to the formation and growth of continental landmasses and subsequent continent collisions. The holistic view of crustal growth and continental evolution suggested in the paper provides a robust and testable model of Earth evolution from its early stages to the present day.

Sebastien Owona et al.

Summary: The Nyong Complex and the Yaounde Group in Cameroon represent two different crustal sequences with distinct depositional ages and sources, influenced by the Pan-African orogeny. The Nyong Complex likely sourced from the Meso-Neoarchean Congo Shield around 2.8 Ga, while the Yaounde Group lacks a major Archean source and has sources from the Eburnean and Tonian-Cryogenian events. Both units share a Pan-African orogenic overprint, highlighting the limited source diversity of these old basin deposits.
