Distinguishing the effects of land use policies on ecosystem services and their trade-offs based on multi-scenario simulations

Yanni Zhao et al.

Summary: This study simulated the grain production and water purification of the Dongting Lake Basin under different land use scenarios in 2035, and explored the impact of land use policies on ecosystem services (ESs) and their trade-offs. The results showed that returning farmland to forest land was the main factor, leading to a decrease in grain production and an increase in water purification. Urbanization had a less but spatially heterogeneous impact on ESs. The study provides a scenario approach to distinguish the impact of land use policies on ESs trade-offs.

Summary: This study quantitatively analyzed the spatiotemporal changes in ecosystem services (ES) supply and demand in Guangdong Province from 2000 to 2015. The results showed spatial heterogeneity in the changes, with ES supply being significantly affected by ES demand. Different zones also exhibited spatial correlation in ES supply and demand changes.

Farm households? willingness to participate in China?s Grain-for-Green Program under different compensation scenarios

Jian Peng et al.

Summary: The Grain-for-Green Program (GFGP) in China is considered an effective approach to achieving sustainable development. However, there is limited empirical research on factors motivating participation in GFGP. This case study found that past program support dominates willingness to participate when the government provides subsidies, while subjective perceptions of ecological and economic benefits become important factors when there are no subsidies.

A wavelet coherence approach to detecting ecosystem services trade-off response to land use change

Xueyan Cheng et al.

Summary: Clarifying the complex land use impacts on ecosystem services trade-off is important for watershed sustainable development. This study used spatial continuous wavelet transform and wavelet coherence analysis to explore the trade-off between grain production and water purification in the Dongting Lake Basin. The results showed that the trade-off intensity had alleviated compared to 2005, with the strongest trade-off in farmland and forest land. Land use conflicts and intensity influenced the trade-off, with different impacts depending on the specific types of land use conversions.

Summary: Ecosystem services (ES) clarifies nature's contribution to human in an intuitive way and aims to recognize the importance of nature in decision-making. This study summarizes the connotation of ES-based decision-making (ESDM) and presents a structured framework for ESDM, which provides comprehensive and scientific information for social-ecological system decision-making.

Elevation dependency of ecosystem services supply efficiency in great lake watershed

Song Jiang et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel approach to identifying improvement goals of interacting ecosystem services by using the method of production possibility frontier (PPF) and considering their context dependency. The results show that the supply efficiency of ecosystem services in the Dongting Lake Basin is significantly influenced by the farmland area ratio and elevation. The sub-watersheds with farmland area ratio below the inflection point, mainly located around poor counties, pose a great challenge for improving ecosystem services with trade-off relationship.

Coupling trade-offs and supply-demand of ecosystem services (ES): A new opportunity for ES management

Qiang Feng et al.

Summary: The study proposes a new analytic framework that couples the trade-offs and supply-demand relations of ecosystem services (ES), aiming to minimize supply-demand risk areas and identify an optimal land use plan to simultaneously alleviate ES conflicts and supply-demand contradictions through scenario iterations. This offers new opportunities for improving sustainable ecosystem management.

Grain production space reconstruction and land system function tradeoffs in China

Fei Li et al.

Summary: The study found that there are complex relationships between ecological services and grain production, economic development, and population carrying capacity during the process of grain production space reconstruction. In separate processes, land system functions only appeared as synergies or tradeoffs, but when multiple processes were integrated for system analysis, they became more complex and diverse.
