A hybrid algorithm based on grey wolf optimizer and differential evolution for UAV path planning

Xiaobing Yu et al.

Summary: Autonomous navigation is crucial for UAVs, especially during disasters. A Hybrid GWO and Differential Evolution (HGWODE) algorithm is developed to address UAV path planning. HGWODE combines GWO and DE algorithms to achieve a balance between exploitation and exploration. The improved positioning equation in HGWODE enhances exploitation by having wolves search strategically around the alpha wolf. The rank-based mutation strategy in the DE algorithm promotes exploitation without compromising exploration. Testing on CEC 2014 and UAV path planning demonstrates that HGWODE outperforms GWO and its variants, providing smoother and shorter paths for UAVs.

Jae-Hee Lee et al.

Summary: In heat-pump-driven liquid-desiccant (HPLD) air-conditioning systems, optimizing capacity matching and releasing extra condensing heat are crucial for dehumidification performance, operational feasibility, and system stability. This study conducted a multi-objective optimization to simultaneously maximize system coefficient of performance (COP) and minimize a capacity-matching index of extra condenser. The results showed that the air and solution flow rates of the regenerator should be higher and lower, respectively, than those of the absorber. The optimum temperature of the absorber inlet solution was around 18 degrees C, while the temperature of the regenerator inlet solution was significantly influenced by the decision-making scenario. The system COP increased by 24% and the capacity-matching index of extra condenser decreased by 55% compared to the initial values.

Beluga whale optimization: A novel nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithm

Changting Zhong et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel swarm-based metaheuristic algorithm called beluga whale optimization (BWO), which is inspired by the behaviors of beluga whales, for solving optimization problems. BWO consists of three phases: exploration, exploitation, and whale fall, corresponding to pair swim, prey, and whale fall behaviors, respectively. The self-adaptive balance factor and probability of whale fall in BWO play significant roles in controlling the exploration and exploitation capabilities. Additionally, Levy flight is introduced to enhance the global convergence in the exploitation phase. The effectiveness of BWO is evaluated using 30 benchmark functions and compared with 15 other metaheuristic algorithms through qualitative, quantitative, and scalability analysis. The results show that BWO is a competitive algorithm for solving unimodal and multimodal optimization problems. Furthermore, BWO achieves the first overall rank in the scalability analysis of benchmark functions among the compared metaheuristic algorithms. Four engineering problems are also solved to demonstrate the merits and potential of BWO in solving complex real-world optimization problems. The source code of BWO is publicly available.
