Influences of the pile-restrained floating breakwater on extreme wave forces of coastal bridge with box-girder superstructure under the action of two-dimensional focused waves

Bo Huang et al.

Summary: In recent years, researchers have been focused on reducing the damage caused by extreme waves to coastal bridges. This study utilized a wave-structure coupling method to numerically investigate the effects of a pile-restrained floating breakwater on the focused wave forces on a two-dimensional coastal bridge with a box-girder superstructure. The results demonstrate that the installation of a pile-restrained floating breakwater effectively reduces the focused wave forces on the box-girder superstructure, and the displacement constraint on the floating breakwater leads to even greater reductions in wave forces. Recommendations for the appropriate size of the floating breakwater and the distance between the breakwater and superstructure are provided to improve the reduction effect of focused wave forces on the box-girder superstructure.

Random wave forces on the submerged box-girder superstructure of coastal bridges based on potential flow theory

Bo Huang et al.

Summary: This paper proposed an analytical method to estimate random wave forces on the box-girder superstructure and validated its accuracy. The study found that structural parameters significantly affect the horizontal wave forces on the submerged box-girder superstructure, and a larger ratio of wavelength to width results in smaller horizontal wave forces.

The Influence of Lateral Restraining Stiffness on the Box-Girder Superstructure under Unbroken Solitary Waves

Minglin Chen et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of lateral restraining stiffness on the hydrodynamic performance of box-girder superstructures under extreme wave conditions. A two-dimensional numerical model is established to study the dynamic characteristics and wave forces of the superstructure. The results show that reducing the lateral restraining stiffness can reduce the horizontal and vertical forces on the superstructure, but it also increases the lateral displacement. Therefore, the lateral restraining stiffness and displacement limits should be considered in practical engineering to improve the safety of coastal box-girder superstructures.

Numerical modeling of the interaction between submerged floating tunnel and surface waves

Xuebin Chen et al.

Summary: This study presents a numerical model for analyzing the nonlinear interaction between a moored Submerged Floating Tunnel (SFT) and surface waves. Through laboratory experiments, the model is validated on its ability to simulate the dynamics of the moored floating body under wave action, providing guidance for engineering design. The numerical simulations also investigate the characteristics of wave-tunnel interaction for different hydrodynamic parameters, offering insights on mooring forces and motion responses of the SFT in various wave conditions.

Comparative Study of Tsunami-Like Wave-Induced Forces on Medium-Scale Models of Box Girder and T-Girder Bridges

Zhiying Yang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comparative study of tsunami-induced forces on box girder and T-girder bridges based on component level analysis. The results show that T-girder bridges experience higher and longer-lasting horizontal peak forces, while box girder bridges have significantly larger upward forces than T-girder bridges. Special attention should be paid to the local damage to the upstream web and upstream deck components of both types of girders. The difference in vertical impulse loads between the two types of girders continually increases with the momentum flux, with box girder bridges experiencing 1.7-2.2 times the vertical impulse loads of T-girder bridges in cases of large momentum flux.

Reliability-based retrofit assessment of coastal bridges subjected to wave forces using 3D CFD simulation and metamodeling

Deming Zhu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comprehensive analysis framework using 3D numerical modelling and metamodeling to study the probabilistic performance of retrofit actions on coastal bridges under extreme wave forces. By developing a 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics model and applying an Artificial Neural Network metamodel, accurate predictions of wave forces are made at reduced computational costs. The study also includes the establishment of a bridge fragility curve and examination of different retrofit methods to improve structural performance and reduce failure risk under hurricane effects. The proposed framework aims to facilitate optimal and robust design and maintenance of coastal infrastructures in the long term.
