Role of interfacial energy anisotropy in dendrite orientation in Al-Zn alloys: A phase field study

Yuhong Zhao et al.

Summary: The influence of interfacial energy anisotropy on dendrite morphology was investigated in Al-Zn alloys using the phase-field method. Different types of dendrite morphology were observed, and the occurrence of solute segregation holes and liquid grooves in dendrites was found to be influenced by the anisotropic interfacial energy. Supersaturation was found to be strongly correlated with the formation of liquid holes and liquid grooves as well as the degree of solute segregation. The relationship between interfacial energy anisotropy, Zn concentration, elastic anisotropy, and dendrite orientation deserves attention.

Numerical modelling of equiaxed dendritic growth with sedimentation in the melt of binary alloys by using an anisotropic lattice Boltzmann-phase field model

Xuezhou Wang et al.

Summary: An anisotropic lattice Boltzmann-phase field (LB-PF) model is developed to simulate the equiaxed dendritic growth with sedimentation in the melt of binary alloys under gravity. The model is validated by comparing with reference data for circular particle sedimentation and non-deformed dendrite movement simulations. The effects of solid-liquid density ratio, initial supersaturation, and crystallographic orientation on equiaxed dendrite growth and sedimentation behavior are numerically investigated. The model shows great potential for simulating dendritic growth with sedimentation of binary alloys, which has important instructional significance for regulating the microscopic dendritic morphologies during solidification and improving the macroscopic mechanical properties.

Phase-field-lattice Boltzmann method for dendritic growth with melt flow and thermosolutal convection-diffusion

Nanqiao Wang et al.

Summary: A new phase-field model formulated within the lattice Boltzmann equation system is proposed for simulating solidification and dendritic growth with fully coupled melt flow and thermosolutal convection-diffusion. The model combines the advantages of phase-field method and lattice Boltzmann method with improved features such as a novel LB scheme for phase-field evolution, convenient diffuse interface treatments, and decoupling of the evolution of fields on the level of microscopic distribution functions. The proposed model demonstrates applicability and accuracy in various numerical tests, making it an attractive and powerful tool for large-scale dendritic growth simulations.
