Seasonal and diel variations in the vertical distribution, composition, abundance and biomass of zooplankton in a deep Chilean Patagonian Fjord

Nur Garcia-Herrera et al.

Summary: Through studying the seasonal and diel changes of the zooplankton community in Comau Fjord, it was found that zooplankton biomass was highest in summer and lowest in winter, while abundance peaked in spring. Copepods were identified as the most important group in terms of abundance and biovolume.

Environmental drivers of a decline in a coastal zooplankton community

Seona R. Wells et al.

Summary: Major changes in North Atlantic zooplankton communities in recent decades have been linked to climate change, and the roles of environmental drivers are often complex. This study analyzed long-term monitoring data from the west coast of Scotland to investigate the decline in zooplankton abundance. The results showed that declines in abundance were partly explained by a negative trend in salinity, alongside the seasonal cycle and potential changes in offshore water masses.

Modification of fatty acid profile and biosynthetic pathway in symbiotic corals under eutrophication

Taihun Kim et al.

Summary: The study found that chronic eutrophication inhibits corals' ability to synthesize essential fatty acids, and certain fatty acid ratios and biomarkers can be used to determine the degree of autotrophy and heterotrophy in corals. Different feeding strategies affect the fatty acid profiles of coral host tissues under eutrophication.

Summary: This study focuses on the emblematic cold-water coral Desmophyllum dianthus in the Comau Fjord, confirming it as a panmictic population through analyses of microsatellite loci. The results highlight the importance of synchrony between environmental factors and the biological cycle of the species in ecological inference.

The carbon and nitrogen budget of Desmophyllum dianthus-a voracious cold-water coral thriving in an acidified Patagonian fjord

Sandra R. Maier et al.

Summary: In the North Patagonian fjord region, the cold-water coral Desmophyllum dianthus shows high densities despite low pH and aragonite saturation. A laboratory experiment investigated the carbon and nitrogen budget of D. dianthus under different feeding scenarios, finding that additional feeding with krill increased coral metabolism and growth efficiency, while short-term food deprivation led to reductions in respiration and nutrient release. The study suggests that efficiency in capturing krill and zooplankton, along with dietary flexibility, help D. dianthus thrive in adverse environmental conditions, but the impact of anthropogenic factors on the species' energy balance remains uncertain.

Species That Fly at a Higher Game: Patterns of Deep-Water Emergence Along the Chilean Coast, Including a Global Review of the Phenomenon

Vreni Haussermann et al.

Summary: The phenomenon of deep-water emergence has been observed along the Chilean coast, with previously 'deep' species being found at shallow depths in some parts of Chilean Patagonia. Researchers have conducted surveys on over 1000 invertebrate species along the Chilean coast, identifying certain deep-sea species also present in shallow waters.
