Patients With Adenocarcinoma of the Esophagus or Esophagogastric Junction Frequently Have Potential Screening Opportunities

Joel H. Rubenstein et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the potential opportunities for screening and surveillance among patients who later developed EAC or EGJAC. The study found that few EAC patients had undergone EGD before diagnosis, while similar opportunities existed for EGJAC patients as well.

Diagnosis and Management of Barrett's Esophagus: An Updated ACG Guideline

Nicholas J. Shaheen et al.

Summary: Barrett's esophagus is a common condition associated with chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease and is a precursor to esophageal adenocarcinoma. The revised guidelines propose recommendations for the definition, diagnosis, screening, surveillance, and treatment of Barrett's esophagus, including important changes such as expanding acceptable screening methods and volume criteria for treatment centers.

Low Prevalence of Endoscopic Screening for Barrett's Esophagus in a Screening-Eligible Primary Care Population

Swathi Eluri et al.

Summary: This study found that only 39% of eligible patients for Barrett's esophagus screening underwent upper esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), with most of the examinations being triggered by refractory symptoms. Improved dissemination and implementation of BE screening are needed.

Incomplete Response of Gastroesophageal Reflux Symptoms Poorly Predicts Erosive Esophagitis or Barrett's Esophagus

Joel H. Rubenstein et al.

Summary: The study found an association between incomplete response of GERD symptoms to PPI and psychological distress, but it is not a good predictor for endoscopic pathology. Patients with high psychological distress are less likely to have esophageal pathology such as erosive esophagitis or Barrett's esophagus.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease: A risk factor for laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study cohort

Shao-Ming Wang et al.

Summary: The study found an association between GERD and esophageal adenocarcinoma, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, and laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma, which remained significant after adjusting for multiple potential confounders. The estimated prevalence of GERD in the general population aged 50-71 in the United States was 22.04%, with approximately 16.92% of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma cases and 17.32% of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma cases in this age group estimated to be associated with GERD. Future prospective studies are needed to confirm these findings and potentially inform clinical surveillance and prevention strategies.

Validation of Tools for Predicting Incident Adenocarcinoma of the Esophagus or Esophagogastric Junction

Joel H. Rubenstein et al.

Summary: This study validated 4 tools for predicting incident EAC and EGJAC in a large community-based population, with the Kunzmann tool showing the best calibration. Tools such as the Nord-Trondelag Health Study tool and Michigan Barrett's Esophagus pREdiction Tool were more accurate than using GERD alone for risk stratification. Future studies should focus on implementing these tools into clinical practice.
