Naturalistic Hyperscanning with Wearable Magnetoencephalography

Niall Holmes et al.

Summary: The evolution of human cognitive function relies on complex social interactions, but the neural basis of these interactions remains poorly understood. Hyperscanning with wearable magnetoencephalography (MEG) based on optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) provides a promising approach to investigate the neural correlates of social interaction. This study demonstrates the feasibility of OPM-MEG in capturing brain activity during interactive tasks and shows that it overcomes the limitations of existing technologies in terms of data acquisition and naturalistic setting.

Triaxial detection of the neuromagnetic field using optically-pumped magnetometry: feasibility and application in children

Elena Boto et al.

Summary: Optically-pumped magnetometers (OPMs) are a viable alternative to superconducting sensors for magnetoencephalography (MEG), with advantages such as flexibility, uniform coverage, better data quality, and lower cost. This study introduces a novel triaxial OPM sensor that can accurately and sensitively measure magnetic fields, showing comparable performance to conventional OPMs. A child-friendly 3D-printed OPM-helmet is also proposed, demonstrating the feasibility of triaxial measurement in pediatric populations.

Calibration and Localization of Optically Pumped Magnetometers Using Electromagnetic Coils

Joonas Iivanainen et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a method for calibrating and localizing magnetic field sensors using electromagnetic coils. The method is applied to optically pumped magnetometers in magnetoencephalography. By measuring the coil fields, modeling them, and minimizing the errors, the sensor parameters can be obtained. Experimental results confirm the feasibility of this method.

Using OPMs to measure neural activity in standing, mobile participants

Robert A. Seymour et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of OP-MEG systems to capture neural activity during naturalistic paradigms involving movement. The results show that OP-MEG can record event-related fields from the auditory cortex consistently across different movement conditions. The study highlights the exciting possibility of using OP-MEG for scanning populations like young children who are difficult to study with stationary MEG systems.

Automatic coregistration of MRI and on-scalp MEG

Wenyu Gu et al.

Summary: A novel automatic filtering algorithm based on plane segmentation was proposed to locate on-scalp MEG sensors in 3D images reconstructed from optical scanning. Global image registration was employed for the automatic alignment of anatomical images and sensor positions. The deviations of the sensor location and orientation from the averaged result of 10 measurements were less than 1 mm and 0.6 degrees, respectively. The entire process could be completed in less than 4 min. Compared with existing methods that involve various manual procedures, such as moving digitizers to fiducials and repeatedly pulling out sensors, our proposed coregistration method is more efficient and accurate. An automatic method for the coregistration of anatomical structure and on-scalp sensors that will have a large impact on the practical use of on-scalp MEG is developed.
