Role of CO2 geological storage in China?s pledge to carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060

Zhiqi Zhong et al.

Summary: In this study, we examined China's energy consumption and CO2 emissions, as well as the potential for CO2 subsurface storage capacity. The results indicate that China's energy demand will continue to increase and reach 155,495 PJ by 2050. The annual CO2 emissions may peak at 9.8 Gt in 2025-2030 and a total of 377 Gt between 1990 and 2060. A national geological survey shows that 66.74% of geological basin spaces in China are onshore, with 93.89% being saline aquifers. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) in China can store 448 Gt CO2 in the most promising basin spaces, which is sufficient to permanently store CO2 produced from 1990 to 2060. A CO2 source-basin mapping suggests three scenarios based on potential storage spaces, their proximity to CO2 emitters, and economic feasibility. China's CCS costs are estimated to be 20% lower than the US Gulf Coast, and labor prices are the lowest among comparable regions. Four phases are recommended for CCS development, with the Ordos Basin being identified as the most promising region in all phases.

Analysis of the energy consumption in solvent regeneration processes using binary amine blends for CO2 capture

Xinwei He et al.

Summary: Blending two or more amines has been recognized as an efficient strategy for CO2 capture. Four new dual-amine aqueous blends based on 2-dimethylamino-2-methyl-1-propanol (2DMA2M1P) mixed with different primary and secondary amines were formulated and evaluated. The blends showed appreciable CO2 capture performance and, importantly, better desorption performance than conventional MEA.

Machine learning-driven assessment of relationship between activator properties in phase change solvent and its absorption performance for CO2 capture

Yao Shen et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop a machine learning-driven assessment system to screen promising phase change solvents by exploring the relationship between activator properties and absorption performance. Based on machine learning and quantum calculation, the relationships between 11 properties of 30 activators and 6 performance parameters were observed. The proposed assessment system successfully screened 4 phase change solvents with potential excellent performance, and their kinetics and thermodynamics were further verified by experimental results. The regenerative heat of diethylenetriamine/N,N-Diethylethanolamine (DETA/DEEA) was found to be around 2.44 GJ t-1, which is -34% lower than that of the benchmark MEA solvent. It is believed that this assessment system can deepen the understanding of screening and practical application of phase change solvents.

Intermolecular Halogen and Hydrogen Bonding-Controlled Self-Assembly of Network Structures

Li Fen et al.

Summary: Two types of tetra-dentate halogen bonding donors were synthesized using tetrafluoroiodide benzene in tetraphenylene methane and tetraphenyl porphyrin modules. 3,3',5,5'-Tetramethyl-4,4'-bipyridine (TMBP) was used as a halogen bonding acceptor. Through self-assembly, a supramolecular network structure was formed in the solid phase based on intermolecular I···N halogen bonds and H···N hydrogen bonds. Crystal structure revealed the binding patterns of the molecules and the stacking controlled by other hydrogen and halogen bonds.

New method of kinetic modeling for CO2 absorption into blended amine systems: A case of MEA/EAE/3DEA1P trisolvent blends

Wenchao Zheng et al.

Summary: In this study, monoethanolamine, 2-(ethylamino) ethanol, and 3-(diethylamino)-1-propanol were selected as typical trisolvents for CO2 absorption, and the reaction kinetics of these amine blends with CO2 were investigated using experiments and molecular simulations. The observed reaction rate constants were obtained by stopped-flow technology over a temperature range of 293 to 313 K and at different amine concentrations. A theoretical kinetic model based on first-principles quantum-mechanical simulations was proposed to interpret the reactions between CO2 and the aqueous trisolvent amine blends systems, showing good prediction with an acceptable absolute average deviation of 6.32% and satisfactory determination of the kinetics of the involved complicated reactions.

Relationship between tertiary amine's physical property and biphasic solvent's CO2 absorption performance: Quantum calculation and experimental demonstration

Yanan Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between the physical properties of tertiary amines and the phase separation behavior and absorption rate of biphasic solvents through quantum calculation and experimental results. The high electronegativity of the tertiary amine N atom leads to a fast phase separation rate and absorption rate, while increasing the polarity of the N atom can stabilize absorption rate. Overall, this relationship could enhance the understanding for screening and practical application of biphasic solvents.

Analyzing the potential benefits of trio-amine systems for enhancing the CO2 desorption processes

Xiayi Hu et al.

Summary: This study developed an effective trio-amine blend by combining three conventional amines, which significantly reduced the energy consumption and improved the efficiency of CO2 capture. Detailed analysis of the regeneration mechanism revealed that increasing the proton provider in the blend could lower the energy consumption. Compared to reported amine systems, MEA-1DMA2P-PZ showed potential for industrial-scale CO2 capture.
