How does central bank transparency affect systemic risk? Evidence from developed and developing countries

Xiaoming Zhang et al.

Summary: This research examines the impact of central bank transparency on systemic risk, using a sample of 1780 commercial banks in 50 countries from 2006 to 2015, and also discusses whether central bank independence can influence these effects. The results from the OLS and S-GMM models reveal that central bank transparency has a non-linear effect on systemic risk in both developed and developing countries. Specifically, it has a positive U-shaped impact in developed countries and an inverted U-shaped impact in developing countries. Furthermore, improving central bank independence can mitigate the effect of central bank transparency on systemic risk.

Economic volatility, banks' risk accumulation and systemic risk

Wenjia He et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between economic volatility, bank risk accumulation, and systemic risk. The findings suggest that low economic volatility increases bank risk accumulation but decreases systemic risk. However, banks with higher risk accumulation during periods of low economic volatility experience a greater increase in systemic risk during periods of high economic volatility. This research is significant for proactive systemic risk prevention.

Economic policy uncertainty and bank systemic risk: A cross-country analysis

Yuejiao Duan et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of economic policy uncertainty (EPU) on systemic risk, finding that banks are more likely to contribute to systemic risk when EPU increases. It further reveals that this effect is mediated through bank leverage risk and bank asset risk channels. Additionally, the study explores how formal bank regulations and informal institutions can moderate this effect. Furthermore, it investigates the spillover effects of economic policy uncertainty among countries, highlighting the need for appropriate measures to address the resulting systemic risk.

Economic and social impacts of conflict: A cross-country analysis

Thai-Ha Le et al.

Summary: Understanding the impact of conflicts on national economic and social development is crucial, as policymakers need to devise effective mechanisms to counteract the regressive effects of conflicts. By examining the relationships between conflict and different development outcomes such as economic growth, life expectancy, and educational attainment, we found that conflicts have both short-term and long-term effects on development. Interestingly, our analysis also revealed that the negative effects of conflict on development are less significant in higher-income countries.
