A critical review on the evaluation of toxicity and ecological risk assessment of plastics in the marine environment

David Leistenschneider et al.

Summary: The increasing production of plastics and insufficient waste management have resulted in serious pollution of the marine environment by plastic debris. Unlike other known pollutants, plastic can cause physical, chemical, and biological toxic effects. This critical review questions our ability to effectively assess the ecological risks associated with plastic pollution, as scientific articles over the past two decades have highlighted toxic effects at all levels of biological integration. Biases in concentration, size, shape, composition, and microbial colonization have revealed that current toxicity and ecotoxicity tests are not adapted to this unique pollutant. The review suggests improvements to plastic toxicity studies and standards to support future legislation.

Adipocyte Thyroid Hormone β Receptor-Mediated Hormone Action Fine-tunes Intracellular Glucose and Lipid Metabolism and Systemic Homeostasis

Yiruo Ma et al.

Summary: Thyroid hormone (TH) plays a crucial role in energy metabolism and systemic homeostasis by regulating adipose tissues. The active form of TH, triiodothyronine (T3), affects inguinal white adipose tissue (iWAT) and whole-body metabolism. Through the study of mice lacking adipocyte TH receptors (TR) alpha or TR beta, it was found that TR beta is the major mediator of T3's effects on iWAT, influencing metabolic pathways related to glucose uptake and use, fatty acid synthesis, and thermogenesis. Adipocyte TR beta deficiency in mice leads to susceptibility to diet-induced obesity and metabolic dysregulation, highlighting its potential as a target for metabolic diseases.

Reproductive toxicity of micro- and nanoplastics

Shaolong Yang et al.

Summary: Large-scale plastic pollution in terrestrial and marine environments degrades into micro/nanoplastics (MP/NPs), which are found in the environment, marine organisms, and can enter the human body through inhalation or ingestion. These MPs/NPs can enter various organisms and affect different body systems, including reproductive, digestive, and nervous systems, through the induction of different stresses. This paper summarizes the effects of MPs/NPs on the reproductive health of different organisms, the amplification of toxic effects through the food chain, the threat to biodiversity, and the imminent challenge to human reproductive health. Strengthening international communication and cooperation is necessary to remediate plastic pollution and protect biodiversity for a sustainable association between humans and other organisms.

Novel Insights into the Dermal Bioaccessibility and Human Exposure to Brominated Flame Retardant Additives in Microplastics

Ovokeroye A. Abafe et al.

Summary: In this study, an invitro physiologically based extraction test was used to investigate the dermalbioaccessibility of PBDEs and HBCDDs in different types of microplastics. The dermal bioaccessibility of PBDEs was significantly higher in polyethylene MPs compared to polypropylene MPs. The size of MP particles and the presence of cosmetic formulations influenced the bioaccessibility of PBDEs and HBCDDs. Human exposure to these chemicals via dermal contact with MPs was found to be substantial and the dermal pathway was identified as a major route of exposure.

Comparing the effects of polystyrene microplastics exposure on reproduction and fertility in male and female mice

Zhaolan Wei et al.

Summary: Exposure to microplastics has negative effects on the reproductive systems and fertility of mice. Male mice experience reduced sperm quantity and increased sperm deformity, while female mice experience decreased ovary size and follicle number. Additionally, microplastic exposure alters hormone levels and leads to reduced pregnancy rates and fewer embryos in mice.

Occurrence, human exposure, and risk of microplastics in the indoor environment

Hassan Khalid Ageel et al.

Summary: Microplastics (MPs) have attracted increasing attention due to their ubiquitous presence in the environment, with limited research on human exposure indoors. Studies have shown higher concentrations of MPs in indoor air and dust, raising concerns about potential health risks through inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact. More research is needed to understand the full extent of human exposure and develop regulations to protect health and the environment.

Toxic effects of nanoplastics with different sizes and surface charges on epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition in A549 cells and the potential toxicological mechanism

Gulinare Halimu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) can increase the risk of lung fibrosis by inducing epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in alveolar epithelial cells. This process may be mediated by the up-regulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and NADPH oxidase 4 (NOX4), as well as mitochondrial dysfunction, among other mechanisms. Furthermore, smaller PS-NPs with a positive surface charge show stronger effects and the involvement of NOX4 is essential in this process.

Detection of microplastics in human lung tissue using μFTIR spectroscopy

Summary: Airborne microplastics (MPs) have been found to have increased concentrations in areas with high human population and activity, especially indoors. This study analyzed human lung tissue samples and identified 39 MPs in 11 out of 13 samples, with an average concentration of 1.42 +/- 1.50 MP/g of tissue. The most abundant polymer types were polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and resin. The study also found that MPs were present in all regions of the lung, with significantly higher levels in the lower region compared to the upper and middle regions. These findings suggest that inhalation is a route of exposure for environmental MPs.
