Efficient separation and recovery of valuable gallium and indium from gallium-based liquid metal waste

Zicheng Li et al.

Summary: Considering gallium-based liquid metal (G-LM) waste as a hazardous waste, a scheme for acid-leaching resin separation and purification of gallium (Ga) and indium (In) was proposed. The G-LM waste was leached with 3 M HNO3, followed by adsorption and elution using a CL-P204 solvent-impregnated resin. The recovery and purity rates of Ga were 96.01% and 99.49%, while those of In were 99.83% and 98.23%. The P204 resin used in the process can be recycled, providing a new and environmentally friendly method for Ga and In separation and purification from G-LM waste.

A sustainable process for selective recovery of metals from gallium-bearing waste generated from LED industry

Yifan Yang et al.

Summary: A green and innovative method was proposed to selectively recover gallium (Ga) from Ga-bearing waste. Through a phase-controlling transition process, gallium nitride (GaN) and indium (In) were converted into alkali-soluble gallium (III) oxide (Ga2O3) and alkali-insoluble indium oxides (In2O3), while nitrogen was converted into diatomic nitrogen gas instead of ammonia/ammonium (NH3/NH4+). By selectively leaching with NaOH solution, nearly 92.65% of Ga can be recycled with a leaching selectivity of 99.3%, while little emissions of NH3/NH4+ were generated. Ga2O3 with a purity of 99.97% was obtained from the leachate, showing economic promising by economic assessment. Therefore, the proposed methodology is potentially greener and more efficient compared to conventional acid and alkali leaching methods for extracting valuable metals from nitrogen-bearing solid waste.

Photocatalytic degradation of octadecylamine and 4-dodecylmorpholine over titanium based photocatalyst: Activity and mechanism insights

Liang Ma et al.

Summary: More than 70% of global potash fertilizer production is carried out using the froth flotation process, with octadecylamine (ODA) and 4-dodecylmorpholine (DMP) being the main flotation agents. However, the increased presence of ODA and DMP in aquatic environments due to fertilizer production poses a threat to ecosystems and chemical production. In this study, photocatalytic degradation of ODA and DMP using a titanium-based photocatalyst was conducted. The degradation rates of ODA and DMP were found to reach 100% within 6 hours and 3 hours, respectively, over anatase TiO2 (TiO2-A), which was much higher than those over rutile TiO2 (TiO2-R). The results indicate the potential of TiO2-A as an efficient photocatalyst for the degradation of flotation agents in potash fertilizer production.

Extraction of Gallium from Brown Corundum Dust by Roasting-Acid Leaching Process

Juhua Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the extraction of gallium from brown corundum dust and finds that gallium is mainly present in the potassium-rich phase. Through roasting activation and acid leaching, gallium can be efficiently recovered. The experimental results show that sodium carbonate is a better roasting activator, and by roasting at 1073K for 40 minutes with a sodium carbonate dosage of 0.5, the phase composition of the dust changes completely and approximately 93% of gallium can be recovered.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the kinetic parameters of the hydrothermal dissolution of Brazilian glauconitic siltstone (Verdete) with calcium hydroxide. It was found that K+ ion extraction was proportional to the Ca(OH)(2)/Verdete ratio and time, but high temperatures and ratios could cause agglomeration and interrupt the dissolution process. Rotation of the furnace could prevent agglomeration, but did not significantly increase the extraction rate of K+ ions.
