Evaluation of the performance of robot assisted CT-guided percutaneous needle insertion: Comparison with freehand insertion in a phantom

Ilse M. Spenkelink et al.

Summary: Purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of a novel robot for CT-guided needle positioning procedures and compare it to the freehand technique. The results showed that the robot system improved the number of technically successfully needle targeting, with higher accuracy and required fewer needle position adjustments compared to the freehand technique. The study concluded that CT-guided needle positioning with the robot was more successful and accurate than freehand needle positioning and required fewer needle position adjustments without prolonging the procedure.

A computational multilayer model to simulate hollow needle insertion into biological porcine liver tissue

Mohamed G. Jushiddi et al.

Summary: The research focused on developing a simple multilayer tissue model to simulate needle insertion into soft biological tissue, specifically porcine liver tissue. The study validated the accuracy of the computational model by comparing needle insertion forces and cutting forces with experimental data. The findings indicated that the bevel angle of the needle affects cutting force but not insertion force, highlighting the importance of understanding the biomechanical behavior of medical needles in soft biological tissue to advance clinical applications such as robot-assisted surgery.

The effect of skin tension, needle diameter and insertion velocity on the fracture properties of porcine tissue

T. Irwin et al.

Summary: The fracture properties of skin tissue are crucial in medical treatments and surgeries. Experimental results showed that skin tension has a significant impact on fracture properties, while insertion speed has a negligible effect. Additional parameters beyond the three independent variables influence the fracture process.

Engineering Microneedle Patches for Improved Penetration: Analysis, Skin Models and Factors Affecting Needle Insertion

Pooyan Makvandi et al.

Summary: Transdermal microneedle patches are a promising tool for delivering active compounds into the skin, requiring sufficient skin penetration to ensure cargo release at predetermined locations. Pain signal and management during microneedle and hypodermic needle application are compared, alongside discussions on factors affecting insertion and recent strategies to improve skin penetration.
