Next generation neural population models

Stephen Coombes

Summary: Low-dimensional neural mass models are frequently used for modeling the collective activity of large populations of neurons and synapses, but they lack a direct connection to underlying biophysical reality, limiting their ability to capture the complex behaviors observed in real neuronal tissue. A new type of neural mass model that incorporates a dynamical equation for population synchrony offers a more accurate representation of brain activity patterns seen in neuroimaging recordings.

Effect of Cauchy noise on a network of quadratic integrate-and-fire neurons with non-Cauchy heterogeneities

Viktoras Pyragas et al.

Summary: We study the dynamics of large networks of pulse-coupled quadratic integrate-and-fire neurons driven by Cauchy noise and non-Cauchy heterogeneous inputs. Two types of heterogeneities, defined by families of q-Gaussian and flat distributions, are considered. We derive exact systems of mean-field equations for both families and analyze their bifurcations. Our results demonstrate that noise and heterogeneity have qualitatively different effects on the collective dynamics of neurons.

Synchronization in simplicial complexes of memristive Rulkov neurons

Mahtab Mehrabbeik et al.

Summary: This research investigates the synchronization in a higher-order network and explores the impact of higher-order interactions on network synchronization. The findings show that higher-order interactions can adjust the synchronization patterns and enhance synchronization with increased network size. Additionally, cluster synchronization is observed in the presence of higher electrical coupling strength.

Control of collective human behavior: Social dynamics beyond modeling

Ilias Panagiotopoulos et al.

Summary: This article introduces a model-free approach to analyze the movement of pedestrians and gain a quantitative understanding of crowd dynamics using concepts from control and analysis of dynamical systems. The approach allows for identification of dynamical unstable signatures in pedestrian flows, providing a fundamental understanding of collective human behavior and benchmarks for evaluating mathematical models for pedestrian motion based on experimental observations.

Dynamics of a network of quadratic integrate-and-fire neurons with bimodal heterogeneity

Viktoras Pyragas et al.

Summary: An exact low-dimensional system of mean-field equations for an infinite-size network of pulse-coupled integrate-and-fire neurons with a bimodal distribution of excitability parameter has been derived and studied. Bifurcation analysis reveals a variety of dynamic modes, such as multistable equilibrium states, collective oscillations, and chaos, which do not exist with a unimodal distribution of the excitability parameter. The coexistence of oscillatory modes with stable equilibrium states is also observed.

Mean-field models of populations of quadratic integrate-and-fire neurons with noise on the basis of the circular cumulant approach

Denis S. Goldobin

Summary: A circular cumulant representation is developed for a recurrent network of quadratic integrate-and-fire neurons subject to noise, with a global synaptic coupling. A hierarchy of smallness is identified for the infinite chain of circular cumulant equations, leading to the truncation and suggestion of several two-cumulant neural mass models. Analysis of the accuracy of these models goes beyond traditional approaches, allowing for the description of noise effects on macroscopic transitions within a population with inhibitory coupling.

Summary: The study analyzes collective oscillations and their suppression in a large-scale neural network, revealing different dynamic modes such as stable resting state, stable limit cycle, and bistability. It demonstrates that specific stimulation can effectively suppress collective oscillations in the network.
