Analytical design models for geotechnical seismic isolation systems

Hing-Ho Tsang

Summary: This paper introduces the geotechnical seismic isolation (GSI) technology and its application in engineering practice. The development of equivalent-linear foundation stiffness and damping models, as well as the derivation of dynamic properties for flexible-base systems, provide a theoretical basis for the design of GSI systems. The effectiveness of the proposed design models is verified through response history analyses and a detailed hand-calculation design procedure.

Dynamic characterization of tire derived aggregates using cyclic simple shear and bender element tests

Ahmed Moussa et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamic and cyclic behaviors of tire-derived aggregates (TDA) and factors affecting their characterization using cyclic simple shear tests. The results show that the shear modulus and damping ratio of TDA range from 85 to 4290 kPa and 7-25%, respectively. The shear modulus is strongly influenced by loading frequency, drainage condition, anisotropy, shear strain amplitude, and vertical stress, while these parameters have little or reduced effects on the damping ratios of TDA specimens.

Experimental investigation on the mechanical and damping properties of rubber-sand-concrete prepared with recycled waste tires for aseismic isolation layer

Xiancheng Mei et al.

Summary: Waste tires are a potential threat to the environment, and recycling and reusing them have become increasingly important. A new material called rubber-sand-concrete (RSC) is proposed for aseismic design of underground tunnels. The proportions of rubber content, cement content, and rubber particle size in the RSC formula were investigated, and their effects on mechanical and damping properties were discussed. The results show that rubber and cement content have a significant influence, while rubber particle size has minimal effect within a certain range.

Seismic response of low-rise buildings with eco-rubber geotechnical seismic isolation (ERGSI) foundation system: numerical investigation

Gabriele Chiaro et al.

Summary: The authors have developed an eco-rubber geotechnical seismic isolation (ERGSI) foundation system for new low-rise buildings, which is cost-effective and sustainable. The system consists of a horizontal geotechnical seismic isolation layer made of gravel-rubber mixtures (GRMs) and a flexible rubberised concrete (RuC) raft footing. The study demonstrates that using this foundation system can significantly reduce the seismic demand on low-rise buildings.

Novel seismic design solution for underground structures. Case study of a 2-story 3-bay subway station

Xiangbo Bu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an innovative seismic design approach for shallow rectangular cut-and-cover underground subway or railway stations, which utilizes hinged and sliding connections to reduce the lateral stiffness of the structures and adapt to seismic motions. The case study results demonstrate that the sliding-hinged alternative solution can significantly alleviate seismic damage to the structural members.

Effect of imperfect interfaces on dynamic response of a composite lining tunnel with an isolation layer under plane P and SV waves

Ning Zhang et al.

Summary: This study presents an analytical solution to the scattering of plane P and SV waves by a composite lining tunnel with imperfect interfaces in full space. The research findings indicate that the dynamic stress concentration factor (DSCF) generated by SV waves in the final lining of a composite tunnel is larger than that of P waves, and interface imperfections tend to weaken the stress concentration in the final lining.

Seismic response of underground stations with friction pendulum bearings under horizontal and vertical ground motions

Zhiyi Chen et al.

Summary: This paper simulates the FPB at a subway station in Shanghai and studies its isolation effect and mechanism. It is found that the FPB can reduce the shear force and bending moment of central columns during earthquakes, without significantly increasing inter-layer displacement. Vertical ground motion reduces the isolation effect of the FPB, with the reduction increasing with the acceleration amplitude of the vertical ground motion.
