Ground-based remote sensing provides alternative to satellites for monitoring cyanobacteria in small lakes

Katherine Cook et al.

Summary: This study aimed to establish a regional multispectral reflectance model for rapid and remote detection of cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs) in small- to medium-sized reservoirs in Oklahoma. The ground-based remote sensing model outperformed the satellite-based model in detecting cyanoHABs, providing a valuable tool for water management and public health.

Satellite assessment of eutrophication hot spots and algal blooms in small and medium-sized productive reservoirs in Uruguay's main drinking water basin

Bernardo Zabaleta et al.

Summary: Intensive agricultural activities and damming of rivers contribute to eutrophication and harmful phytoplankton blooms in reservoirs. This study assessed the trophic state of fourteen reservoirs in the Santa Lucia River Basin using Sentinel-2 images. The reservoirs were found to be hypereutrophic with high phytoplankton biomasses, mainly cyanobacteria. Models were developed to estimate satellite chlorophyll-a and transparency based on in situ data and Sentinel-2 imagery. The spatial distribution of the trophic state was analyzed, identifying reservoirs with higher potential for phytoplankton biomass export.

Living up to the Hype of Hyperspectral Aquatic Remote Sensing: Science, Resources and Outlook

Heidi M. Dierssen et al.

Summary: The intensifying pressure on global aquatic resources and services due to population growth and climate change has led to the development of new surveying technologies, with hyperspectral remote sensing being a rapidly advancing field. This technology provides more environmentally meaningful information than traditional imaging, offering new applications for assessing aquatic ecosystems and hazards. Resources such as reviews, databases, and software are available to practitioners in the field to support these advancements.

Chlorophyll a as an indicator of microcystin: Short-term forecasting and risk assessment in Lake Erie

Song S. Qian et al.

Summary: This study developed a short-term forecasting model of particulate cyanobacterial toxin concentrations in Western Lake Erie using a Bayesian hierarchical modeling framework. The model parameters are allowed to vary annually and seasonally, making it suitable for short-term risk assessment. The modeling process demonstrates the use of informative priors in developing Bayesian models.

Hot moments and hotspots of cyanobacteria hyperblooms in the Curonian Lagoon (SE Baltic Sea) revealed via remote sensing-based retrospective analysis

Diana Vaiciute et al.

Summary: A detailed analysis of cyanobacteria blooms in the Curonian Lagoon from 1985 to 2018 revealed a tendency towards later occurrence and longer duration of blooms. Factors affecting the presence and area of blooms include cyanobacteria standing stock and ambient wind conditions. Spatial patterns of blooms are influenced by water renewal time, current patterns, and potential nutrient sources. Despite efforts to control eutrophication, the lagoon is still considered to be in poor ecological status.

Wind Effects for Floating Algae Dynamics in Eutrophic Lakes

Yuchao Zhang et al.

Summary: The research compared the effects of wind speed on algal blooms in three typical eutrophic lakes in China, and found that wind speed has a significant impact on the vertical distribution of algae in these lakes. Climate change affects the wind speed in the lakes, which in turn affects the biomass of algae in the lakes.

Miao Liu et al.

Summary: This study utilized multi-spectral and operational land imaging instruments to monitor spatial and seasonal variations in floating algae blooms in Lake Xingyun, China from 2016 to 2020. Results showed that floating algae occurred more in the northern region and were more frequent in summer and autumn seasons.

Widespread deoxygenation of temperate lakes

Stephen F. Jane et al.

Summary: The concentration of dissolved oxygen in aquatic systems plays a crucial role in regulating biodiversity, nutrient biogeochemistry, greenhouse gas emissions, and drinking water quality. Climate change and human activities have led to declines in dissolved oxygen in lakes, impacting the physical and chemical environment, as well as essential ecosystem services.
