A theoretical thermal conductivity model for soils treated with microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP)

Zhaoyu Wang et al.

Summary: A theoretical thermal conductivity prediction model was developed for MICP treated soils, showing that soil thermal conductivity increases nonlinearly with the ratio of cement radius to soil particle radius and soil particle spacing to soil particle radius. The model provides a calculation method for predicting soil thermal conductivity after MICP treatment.

Wettability reversal on oil-wet calcite surfaces: Experimental and computational investigations of the effect of the hydrophobic chain length of cationic surfactants

Julius Tetteh et al.

Summary: The low oil recovery in carbonate reservoirs is primarily attributed to the oil-wet state of the rocks. The use of cationic surfactants can reverse the carbonate wettability to a more water-wet state, thereby enhancing oil recovery. This study investigated the wettability reversal efficiency of quaternary ammonium cationic surfactants with varying hydrophobic chain length through molecular dynamics simulations and experimental contact angle measurements. The findings revealed that longer surfactants consistently rendered calcite surfaces more water-wet, indicating a strong correlation between surfactant length and wettability reversal.

P. J. Vardon et al.

Summary: This study presents correlations between cone penetration tests and thermal properties of saturated ground, which significantly reduce the time needed to obtain thermal properties of soils. The correlations show good agreement with laboratory tests and various soil types, but empirical adjustments are required for certain types of soils.

Effective thermal conductivity of particulate composites for time-varying temperature fields

S. Kanaun et al.

Summary: The study examines a homogeneous conductive medium with random sets of identical spherical inclusions, and utilizes the self-consistent effective medium method to solve the homogenization problem. For time-varying fields, the effective conductivity parameters are non-local operators. A numerical algorithm is proposed for solving the system of nonlinear equations, providing effective thermal conductivity parameters.

A generalized model for effective thermal conductivity of soils considering porosity and mineral composition

Kai-Qi Li et al.

Summary: This study used the finite element method to estimate the thermal conductivity of dry porous soils considering the impacts of mineral composition and porosity. A generalized model was proposed to predict the thermal conductivity, with the establishment of a modified form of Johansen's model to evaluate soil solid thermal conductivity and the observation of a parabolic decrease in thermal conductivity with porosity. The proposed model's performance was validated through comparison with experimental data and an illustration of its application.
