Crosstalk between microbial biofilms in the gastrointestinal tract and chronic mucosa diseases

Summary: This study evaluates the connection between GI tract biofilms and chronic mucosa diseases such as chronic gastritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and colorectal cancer. The representative biofilm makers including Helicobacter pylori, adherent-invasive Escherichia coli, Bacteroides fragilis, and Fusobacterium nucleatum in each disease are summarized. The study discusses the role of biofilms in causing inflammation and the pro-carcinogenic stage, as well as the typical resistance, persistence, and recurrence mechanisms seen in vitro. Biofilms may serve as a new biomarker for endoscopic and pathologic detection of gastrointestinal disease and suppression, which may be a useful addition to the present therapy strategy.

Dietary intervention has shown potential in improving barrier function and restricting bacterial invasion, but there are no medical guidelines for the treatment or prevention of bacterial translocation in patients with leaky gut syndrome.

Summary: In this study, we demonstrated the high efficacy and acceptable safety profiles of phage therapy against Salmonella enterica strains using vB_SenM-2 and vB_Sen-TO17 phages (both alone and in a cocktail). The phages effectively reduced bacterial cell number, bacterial biofilm, and showed better efficacy compared to known antibiotics. The safety of phage therapy was also confirmed using chromogenic tests and viability assays. The in vivo model showed a significant improvement in animal survival. These findings suggest the potential practical use of phage therapy in poultry farming.
