Synthesis and isolation of a triplet bismuthinidene with a quenched magnetic response

Yue Pang et al.

Summary: In this work, the synthesis and characterization of a monocoordinate bismuthinidene compound with a rigid and bulky ligand were reported. Despite showing diamagnetic properties in all magnetic measurements, multiconfigurational quantum chemical calculations revealed that the compound's ground state is dominated by a spin triplet. The apparent diamagnetism is explained by an extremely large spin-orbit coupling-induced positive zero-field splitting.

Beyond Steric Crowding: Dispersion Energy Donor Effects in Large Hydrocarbon Ligands

Kristian L. Mears et al.

Summary: Interactions between sterically crowded hydrocarbon-substituted ligands involve both repulsive Pauli repulsion and attractive London dispersion interactions. Although the London dispersion interactions play a central role in the formation of condensed matter, they are not as widely recognized as the Pauli repulsion. This is due to the relatively weak individual H⋅⋅⋅H interactions compared to the collective LD energy resulting from numerous H⋅⋅⋅H interactions. The importance of LD attraction energies emerges in certain molecules and can overshadow the Pauli effects.

Nitrogen-Centered Radicals in Functionalization of sp2 Systems: Generation, Reactivity, and Applications in Synthesis

Cassie Pratley et al.

Summary: The chemistry of nitrogen-centered radicals has wide applications in organic synthesis, particularly in recent advances such as C-H amination and the (di)amination of alkenes. The efficient functionalization of sp(2) moieties allows for faster synthesis of challenging structures. Additionally, the reactivity of nitrogen-centered radicals can be harnessed for the rapid construction of N-heterocycles.

Main Group Multiple Bonds for Bond Activations and Catalysis

Catherine Weetman

Summary: This Minireview discusses the rapid expansion of molecular main group multiple bonds after the discovery of breaking the double-bond rule. While these compounds show potential in small molecule activation and mimicking transition metals, their catalytic behavior is somewhat limited. The review aims to highlight the potential of these complexes in catalytic applications and further functionalizations, serving as versatile tools for modern synthetic chemists.

Coordination Chemistry of Bulky Aminopryridinates with Main Group and Transition Metals

Awal Noor

Summary: Bidentate aminopyridinato ligands, particularly 2-aminopyridines, have become popular in coordination chemistry as alternatives to cyclopentadienyl ligands. The easy modifiability and fine-tuning of electronic effects of 2-aminopyridines have enabled researchers to control metal complexes properties. By introducing bulky steric bulks, the ligands can stabilize transition metals in unusually low oxidation conditions and even stabilize metal-metal quintuple bonds. These ligands have also found broad application in homogeneous catalysis in recent years.

A Metal-Free Direct Arene C-H Amination

Tao Wang et al.

Summary: This study reports a metal-free method for aryl C-H amination using hydroxylamine derivatives under mild conditions, enabling highly chemoselective amination of arenes even in the presence of various functional groups. Oxygen played a crucial role in the reaction by accelerating the electron transfer step, as supported by experimental evidence and theoretical studies showing the involvement of a dioxygen-bridged complex in the reaction mechanism.

Metal-based Heterogeneous Catalysts for One-Pot Synthesis of Secondary Anilines from Nitroarenes and Aldehydes

Giuseppe Romanazzi et al.

Summary: In recent years, N-substituted anilines have attracted increasing research interest in organic chemistry as key intermediates for important compound synthesis. The one-pot reductive amination of aldehydes with nitroarenes is a particularly interesting method to access secondary anilines, allowing the synthesis of diverse N-substituted aryl amines by simple reduction and condensation reactions. The growth in the use of metal-based heterogeneous catalysts for this reaction calls for a review on the different types of metals used as catalysts and their recyclability features.

Electrophilic Aminating Agents in Total Synthesis

Lauren G. O'Neil et al.

Summary: Classical amination methods involve the reaction of a nitrogen nucleophile with an electrophilic carbon center; however, in recent years, umpoled strategies have gained traction where the nitrogen source acts as an electrophile. A wide range of electrophilic aminating agents are now available, and these underpin a range of powerful C-N bond-forming processes. In this Review, we highlight the strategic use of electrophilic aminating agents in total synthesis.

Synthesis and Characterization of Super Bulky β-Diketiminato Group 1 Metal Complexes

Dafydd D. L. Jones et al.

Summary: The sterically bulky beta-diketiminate ligand systems have been synthesized and characterized, showing the ability to stabilize highly reactive low-oxidation state main group metal complexes. Reactions with nBuLi yield lithium etherate compounds, while unsolvated potassium salts were also synthesized. These group 1 complexes have potential as reagents for transferring bulky ligand fragments to metal halides and stabilizing low-oxidation state metal complexes.

Summary: In this study, the effects of modifications of substituents on the performance of the isospecific zirconocene-based catalyst family were systematically investigated. Novel synthetic pathways were developed to enhance the performance of the catalysts, resulting in certain zirconocenes outperforming the parent catalyst in propylene polymerization in terms of molecular weight capability and selectivity.
