Investigation of Ground-Penetrating Radar, Impact Echo, and Infrared Thermography Methods to Detect Defects in Concrete Bridge Decks

Zachary W. Coleman et al.

Summary: In this study, the potential of ground-penetrating radar, infrared thermography, and impact-echo nondestructive technologies in detecting bridge deck defects was evaluated. The results showed that impact-echo testing was the most effective method in evaluating the condition of bridge decks.

Impact-Echo Defect Detection in Reinforced Concrete Bridge Decks without Overlays

Zachary W. Coleman et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of impact-echo testing to detect various types of defects in reinforced concrete bridge decks. Results show that impact echo is generally effective at responding to the presence of delaminations, voids, deterioration, and poorly constructed concrete in bridge decks without overlays. The study also observes how defect thickness, size, and depth affect detectability.

Interpreting Impact Echo Data to Predict Condition Rating of Concrete Bridge Decks: A Machine-Learning Approach

Agnimitra Sengupta et al.

Summary: Developing accurate prediction models of bridge deck deterioration is essential for maintaining the structural reliability of highway bridges under budget constraints. This study focuses on modeling the spectral characteristics of IE signals to quantify the structural integrity of bridge decks and predict CRs. By training and testing the models on data from 38 tested bridges, the proposed model achieved an accuracy of 87.5% in automatically predicting CRs based on raw IE test data.
