Graphdiyene enables ultrafine Cu nanoparticles to selectively reduce CO2 to C2+ products

Yong-Bin Chang et al.

Summary: Reducing the size of nanocatalysts can enhance atomic utilization and activities, but small-sized Cu nanoparticles often have overly strong binding of intermediates, limiting CO2 conversion efficiency. The introduction of Pyr-GDY can improve selectivity and stability of ultrafine Cu NPs, leading to significantly higher Faradic efficiency for C2+ products. This study highlights the crucial role of graphdiyne in influencing the selectivity of Cu-catalyzed CO2 electroreduction, showing promise for ultrafine Cu NPs in converting CO2 into valuable C2+ products.

Engineering Semiconductor Quantum Dots for Selectivity Switch on High-Performance Heterogeneous Coupling Photosynthesis

Ming-Yu Qi et al.

Summary: Semiconductor-based photoredox catalysis offers a sustainable and mild strategy for organic transformation, but controlling selectivity is challenging due to non-selective interactions between semiconductors and photogenerated radicals. By designing atomically dispersed cocatalysts on semiconductor quantum dots, we achieve precise selectivity in high-performance heterogeneous coupling photosynthesis. This work overcomes the difficulties of selectivity regulation in semiconductor-based photochemical synthesis, highlighting the potential of utilizing atomically dispersed cocatalysts to control unselective radical conversion for selective heterogeneous photosynthesis.

Photocatalytic selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols coupled with hydrogen evolution over CdS/WO3 composites

Yu-Lan Wu et al.

Summary: Simultaneously utilizing photogenerated electrons and holes to convert renewable biomass and its derivatives into value-added products and hydrogen (H-2) is a promising strategy. In this study, a facile hydrothermal method is used to construct a direct Z-scheme CdS/WO3 binary composite for photocatalytic coupled redox reaction, producing H-2 and selectively converting aromatic alcohols into aromatic aldehydes in one pot. The CdS/WO3 binary composite exhibits significantly enhanced performance compared to bare CdS and WO3, attributed to its extended light harvesting range, efficient charge carrier separation rate, and optimized redox capability. The feasibility of converting various aromatic alcohols to aldehydes coupled with H-2 evolution on the CdS/WO3 photocatalyst is demonstrated, along with a proposed reaction mechanism.

Photo-Controllable Catalysis and Chiral Monosaccharide Recognition Induced by Cyclodextrin Derivatives

Lei Chen et al.

Summary: A supramolecular catalytic system was constructed using polycationic alpha-cyclodextrin and gold nanoparticles through a supramolecular assembly strategy. The cavity of cyclodextrin acts as the channel for substrate molecules to interact with the catalytic center. The introduction of azobenzene-modified diphenylalanine guest molecules allows for precise photo-control of catalytic activity and enables chiral recognition catalysis for chiral monosaccharides.

A TiO2-Co(terpyridine)2 Photocatalyst for the Selective Oxidation of Cellulose to Formate Coupled to the Reduction of CO2 to Syngas

Erwin Lam et al.

Summary: By immobilizing a phosphonated cobalt bis(terpyridine) catalyst on TiO2 nanoparticles, a photocatalyst was created that can reduce CO2 to syngas while oxidizing biomass to formate. This hybrid photocatalyst, composed of earth-abundant components, shows efficient cellulose-to-formate conversion yield and can be reused multiple times in aqueous solution. The concept of valorizing two waste streams (CO2 and biomass) into value-added chemicals through solar-driven catalysis is successfully demonstrated.
