Thymic changes as a contributing factor in the increased susceptibility of old Albino Oxford rats to EAE development

Marija Petrusic et al.

Summary: The study found that thymic involution impairs the susceptibility of AO rats to clinical EAE, while the development of EAE contributes to the progression of thymic involution. The results suggest that thymic involution promotes the differentiation of CD8+ T cells into IL-17-producing cells and leads to the accumulation of CD28-T cells in the peripheral blood and target organs. Furthermore, the development of EAE decreases the thymic output of T cells, including Tregs, contributing to the progression and maintenance of clinical EAE.
