Retinal transcriptome profiling identifies novel candidate genes associated with visual impairment in a mouse model of multiple sclerosis

Sungmoo Hong et al.

Summary: This study used RNA-sequencing to analyze the transcriptomes of retinas in mice with EAE and identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to EAE-induced visual impairment. Gene expression analysis showed that the upregulated genes in the retinas of mice with EAE were primarily associated with immune responses and immune-mediated inflammation. In addition, gene set enrichment analysis revealed a negative enrichment of gene sets related to the neuronal system and phototransduction cascade in EAE-affected retinas. This study provides novel molecular evidence for visual impairments in EAE and indicates directions for further research to elucidate the mechanisms of these visual impairments in MS.

Synapto-protective effect of lithium on HIV-1 Tat-induced synapse loss in rat hippocampal cultures

Namgue Hong et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of lithium on HIV-1 Tat-induced synapses were investigated, showing that lithium protected synapses from loss and subsequent neuronal death. The protective mechanism involved NMDA receptor activation, intracellular signaling, and the regulatory pathway of lithium. These findings suggest that mood stabilizers could be effective drugs for treating neurodegenerative disorders such as HAND.

Summary: This study found that structural plasticity in the hippocampus is altered in the late phase following striatal 6-OHDA infusion in rats, possibly due to prolonged suppression of the DAergic system, independent of neuroinflammation.

Analysis of α-synuclein levels related to LRRK2 kinase activity: from substantia nigra to urine of patients with Parkinson's disease

Daleum Nam et al.

Summary: Research on Parkinson's disease has focused on developing diagnostic tools and therapeutics. Genetic culprits like DJ-1, LRRK2, and alpha-syn have been studied as markers of PD. ELISA technology has been used to improve the accuracy of measuring alpha-syn in biofluids.
