Post-mortem MRI in stillbirth: Normal imaging appearances

Neerja Gupta et al.

Summary: Post-mortem MRI (PMMRI) can accurately detect most major organ malformations in cases of stillbirth, but variable normal post-mortem changes can mimic pathology, making interpretation difficult. Close interaction with geneticists is necessary for final differentiation and detection of abnormalities, along with thorough evaluation of clinical examination and intranatal imaging records.

Postmortem microfocus computed tomography for noninvasive autopsies: experience in >250 human fetuses

Susan C. Shelmerdine et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of using fetal microfocus computed tomography as an alternative to autopsy and found that it helped confirm antenatal diagnoses in most cases while also detecting additional anomalies.

Post-mortem confirmation of fetal brain abnormalities: challenges highlighted by the MERIDIAN cohort study

P. D. Griffiths et al.

Summary: The study assessed the concordance between post-mortem findings and in utero magnetic resonance imaging (iuMRI) in cases of fetal brain abnormalities. The overall successful post-mortem investigation rate was 40% with an 84% concordance rate between iuMRI and post-mortem examination. Detailed information was provided for cases where post-mortem findings differed from iuMRI results.

Diagnostic value of virtual autopsy using pm-MRI at 3T on malformed second trimester fetuses vs classic autopsy

Adelina Staicu et al.

Summary: Virtual autopsy using post mortem-MRI at 3T is a reliable alternative to classic autopsy for non-forensic analysis of second trimester fetuses. The diagnostic utility is higher for cerebral and renal abnormalities compared to cardiac abnormalities, making it a valuable tool for confirming prenatal findings in certain cases of termination of pregnancy.
