Shared E-Scooter Trajectory Analysis During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Austin, Texas

Matthew D. Dean et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of COVID-19 on shared e-scooters in Austin, TX, by analyzing route trajectory data. Although total trips decreased during the pandemic, average trip length increased and temporal patterns remained stable. Additionally, more trips were observed on road segments with sidewalks and bus stops during the pandemic.

Major trauma among E-Scooter and bicycle users: a nationwide cohort study

Richard Alexander Clough et al.

Summary: A retrospective cohort study in England and Wales compared E-Scooter-related trauma with bicycle-related trauma. The study found that E-Scooter users had a higher risk of serious injury, particularly to the head and limbs, while bicycle users had a higher incidence of serious chest and pelvic injury. Over one-third of E-Scooter injuries were caused by alcohol and drug intoxication or involved patients under the age of 17.

What factors contribute to e-scooter crashes: A first look using a naturalistic riding approach

Elizabeth White et al.

Summary: This study collected a large dataset of e-scooter trips to identify the safety risks associated with behavioral, infrastructure, and environmental factors. The results showed that infrastructure-related factors, behavior of e-scooter riders, and environmental factors contributed to safety risks for e-scooter riders in a campus environment. Educational outreach programs and improved infrastructure maintenance and design can help mitigate these risks.

Shared e-scooter rider safety behaviour and injury outcomes: a review of studies in the United States

Emma G. P. Sexton et al.

Summary: Electric scooters have become increasingly popular in North American cities, with millions of shared e-scooter trips taken in 2021. However, this growth has also brought about safety and injury prevention challenges, leading to the implementation of various regulations and studies on rider safety behavior and associated injury outcomes. The findings suggest the importance of improving infrastructure, providing education and enforcement to reduce violations and impairment, and enhancing rider behavior and perceived safety.

E-scooter riders and pedestrians: Attitudes and interactions in five countries

Matus Sucha et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of e-scooters on pedestrian safety, focusing on the interaction, conflicts, crashes, and attitudes between pedestrians and e-scooter riders. Data collected from riders and non-riders in Australia, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Norway, and Sweden reveal that a significant percentage of e-scooter riders use sidewalks. Non-riders perceive riding e-scooters as dangerous, and pedestrians, except in Australia, find e-scooter riders annoying. A substantial number of e-scooter riders have experienced near misses and crashes. Based on these findings, it is suggested to separate e-scooter riders and pedestrians for sustainable urban mobility.

An online hazard prediction test demonstrates differences in the ability to identify hazardous situations between different driving groups

Petya Ventsislavova et al.

Summary: Previous research has shown that the traditional approach to measuring hazard perception may not work well in different countries. This study applies an alternative method, the hazard prediction test, in a new cultural context (Israel) and finds that it effectively differentiates between experienced and novice drivers. The results highlight the potential for assessing and training drivers on a global scale.

Legalisation of e-scooters in the UK: the injury rate and pattern is similar to those of bicycles in an inner city metropolitan area

D. M. S. Bodansky et al.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the musculoskeletal injuries during the e-scooter rideshare trial in Liverpool. Results showed that 51 patients were injured by e-scooters during the trial period, and there were 6 injuries before the trial. Approximately two-thirds of the injuries occurred on rental e-scooters. We calculated an orthopaedic injury rate of 26.1 injuries per million km on e-scooters and 24.1 injuries per million km on bicycles. Over 70% of e-scooter patients had upper limb injuries, over 50% had lower limb injuries, and 15.7% of patients required surgery. In conclusion, we observed an increase in musculoskeletal injuries during the e-scooter pilot, and the injury rates were comparable to those of bicycles. E-scooters should be closely regulated and additional safety measures should be introduced to minimize the injury rate.

Analysis of Current E-Scooter Safety Regulation in a Large US City Using Epidemiological Components as a Framework

Liliana Salas-Nino

Summary: E-scooters, promoted as a solution to environmental and last-mile issues, have seen a significant increase in injured riders. The current regulations fail to address safety concerns efficiently, and there is a potential underreporting of e-scooter crashes. Local authorities should enact appropriate regulations to tackle these safety issues surrounding micromobility devices.

Environmentally friendly, but behaviorally complex? A systematic review of e-scooter riders' psychosocial risk features

Sergio A. Useche et al.

Summary: This systematic review examines the psychosocial characteristics of e-scooter riders, particularly their behavioral and risk-related features. The findings indicate that e-scooters are most commonly used by young, highly educated, urban-dwelling males for short trips. Individuals with lower risk perception are more likely to engage in risky road behaviors, which may be exacerbated by the lack of e-scooter regulations and road training processes in many countries.

New Micromobility Means of Transport: An Analysis of E-Scooter Users' Behaviour in Trondheim

Margherita Pazzini et al.

Summary: The negative effects of widespread car use, such as congestion, pollution, noise, and accidents, are impacting cities globally. Shared electric scooters and bicycles have the potential to promote sustainable transportation, but some local governments have not yet integrated them into their transportation systems. Unclear legislation makes it difficult to determine whether electric scooters should be classified as bicycles or vehicles. Additionally, predicting their impact on road traffic and interactions with pedestrians and cyclists is challenging. This study analyzed the speed and behavior of electric scooter drivers in Trondheim, Norway, to inform policies for their safe integration into cities.

Summary: The use of non-motorized transportation and micro-mobility is increasing in cities, leading to issues such as risky behaviors and conflicts with other road users. This study compares the riding behaviors of e-scooter riders and cyclists, finding that external raters' perceptions provide insights into the causes and conflicts related to road behaviors. Improving infrastructure and road safety education can enhance how road users' behaviors are perceived.
