Unconfined propeller scour in waterways: The role of flow intensity

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of flow intensity on ship propeller jet scouring in ship maneuvering areas, waterways path, and mooring in navigation channels. An experimental campaign was conducted to explore the flow intensity effects on the propeller jet and related scour. The experimental results are presented in terms of scoured bed profiles and proposed empirical equations for computing the main scour hole dimensions. Additionally, numerical simulations were performed to analyze the influence of flow intensity on the evolution of the scour hole and the boundary effect on the flow field.
