High-efficiency overall alkaline seawater splitting: using a nickel-iron sulfide nanosheet array as a bifunctional electrocatalyst

Jie Chen et al.

Summary: The use of nickel-iron sulfide nanosheet array on nickel foam as a bifunctional electrocatalyst demonstrates high-performance and cost-effective electrolysis of seawater for hydrogen production. It delivers a current density of 500 mA cm(-2) at overpotentials of 300 and 347 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline seawater respectively. Moreover, it only requires a cell voltage of 1.85 V to drive 500 mA cm(-2) in a two-electrode electrolyzer, and shows strong stability for at least 50 hours of electrolysis in alkaline seawater, outperforming recently reported catalyst electrodes for seawater splitting.

Dual N-doped porous carbon derived from pyrolytic carbon black and critical PANIs constructing high-performance Zn ion hybrid supercapacitor br

Guosai Jiang et al.

Summary: Due to the accumulation of low-quality pyrolytic carbon black (CBp) from waste tires, it is important to explore its application in electrochemical energy storage for high-value utilization of carbon resources and cost reduction of supercapacitors. This study synthesized a dual N-doped material (ACBp-oN) through in-situ polymerization of aniline monomers on activated CBp (ACBp) with the introduction of o-phenylenediamine (OPD). ACBp-oN showed satisfactory specific capacitance and superior rate performance in a three-electrode system, attributed to its doped N and enriched channel structure. Furthermore, the assembled Zn ion hybrid supercapacitor (Zn|C) demonstrated a significantly higher energy density than conventional symmetrical supercapacitors (C|C), indicating its practicality. This research provides insights into the high-value utilization of waste CBp resources and strategies for enhancing the electrochemical properties of carbon-based materials.
