Transport of the Proinflammatory Chemokines C-C Motif Chemokine Ligand 2 (MCP-1) and C-C Motif Chemokine Ligand 5 (RANTES) across the Intact Mouse Blood-Brain Barrier Is Inhibited by Heparin and Eprodisate and Increased with Systemic Inflammation

Daniel Quaranta et al.

Summary: One important function of the vascular blood-brain barrier (BBB) is to facilitate neuroimmune communication. The BBB transports proinflammatory chemokines CCL2 and CCL5 across the endothelial surface through heparan sulfates, allowing them to enter the brain parenchyma. The transport of CCL2 and CCL5 increases during systemic inflammation, suggesting a potential therapeutic target for neuroinflammation.

Children and adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorder share distinct microbiota compositions

Caspar Bundgaard-Nielsen et al.

Summary: An association has been found between altered gut microbiota and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The gut microbiota composition was analyzed in children and adolescents with or without these disorders to determine the systemic effects of these bacteria. The study revealed that the gut microbiota compositions of ADHD and ASD cases were similar but different from non-related controls, indicating disruption of the intestinal barrier and immune dysregulation among children with ADHD or ASD.

Immune-Inflammatory Response And Compensatory Immune-Regulatory Reflex Systems And White Matter Integrity in Schizophrenia

Mengzhuang Gou et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between altered immune-inflammatory response system (IRS) and compensatory immune-regulatory reflex system (IRS/CIRS) dynamics with reduced white matter integrity in patients with schizophrenia. The results showed that the IRS/CIRS ratio was significantly higher in patients with schizophrenia compared to healthy controls, and the reduced white matter integrity was mainly observed in the genu of corpus callosum (GCC). The white matter integrity of GCC was positively associated with IRS/CIRS ratio and negatively associated with negative symptom scores.

Interleukin-4 Aggravates LPS-Induced Striatal Neurodegeneration In Vivo via Oxidative Stress and Polarization of Microglia/Macrophages

Jaegeun Jang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of IL-4 on striatal neurons in LPS-injected rat striatum. The results showed a significant loss of striatal neurons and increased IL-4 immunoreactivity post LPS injection. The use of IL-4 neutralizing antibody protected striatal neurons against LPS-induced neurotoxicity and inhibited activation of microglia/macrophages and oxidative damage. It also resulted in a shift of microglia/macrophages from M1 to M2 polarization.

MCP-1 Signaling Disrupts Social Behavior by Modulating Brain Volumetric Changes and Microglia Morphology

Roger Maldonado-Ruiz et al.

Summary: The study reveals a gender-dependent effect of maternal exposure to high-energy diets on proinflammatory profiles and social interaction in mice offspring, with a more significant impact on male offspring. Maternal exposure to cafeteria diet impairs social interaction and increases anxiety in male offspring, but not in females. Additionally, exposure to cafeteria diet or Poly (I:C) during fetal development promotes a proinflammatory profile in ASD-diagnosed males, with MCP-1 playing a key role in the volumetric brain changes and microglia morphology associated with ASD-like behavior.

Systemic inflammation during the first year of life is associated with brain functional connectivity and future cognitive outcomes

Ashley M. Bach et al.

Summary: The first years of life are crucial for neural and immune system development, and adverse experiences during this period can have a negative impact. Recurrent systemic inflammation is associated with poor cognitive outcomes and may affect brain development through connectivity.

Maternal autoantibody profiles as biomarkers for ASD and ASD with co-occurring intellectual disability

Alexandra Ramirez-Celis et al.

Summary: Maternal autoantibody-related ASD (MAR ASD) is a subtype of autism where maternal autoantibodies cross the placenta and affect the developing brain, leading to neurodevelopmental alterations and autism-associated behaviors in the offspring. This study validated previously identified MAR ASD patterns and their accuracy in predicting ASD risk.

Translational evidence for the Inflammatory Response System (IRS)/ Compensatory Immune Response System (CIRS) and neuroprogression theory of major depression

Monojit Debnath et al.

Summary: Research has found abnormal levels of immune inflammation in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), including increased acute phase proteins and pro-inflammatory cytokines. Additionally, there is an activated inflammatory response system (IRS) and a compensatory immune response system (CIRS) present in MDD. Recent studies indicate simultaneous increases in both pro-and anti-inflammatory cytokines in the brain of MDD patients, demonstrating activity of both the IRS and CIRS.
