Multiscale pore structure characterization of an ultra-deep carbonate gas reservoir

Yuxiang Zhang et al.

Summary: The pore structures of shallow and mid-deep carbonate gas reservoirs have been well explored, but the pore structure of the target ultra-deep carbonate gas reservoir in the Shuangyushi play is still unknown. A multiscale micro-CT method was used to evaluate the carbonate samples more realistically, revealing that micro pores, throats, and fractures dominated in this reservoir. A new classification method based on porosity, permeability, and parameters from the multiscale micro-CT method was proposed to classify the ultra-deep carbonate reservoirs into four categories.

Multi-scale and multi-technique characterization of hybrid coquinas: A study case from the Morro do Chaves Formation (Barremian-Aptian of Sergipe-Alagoas Basin, Northeast Brazil)

Marcos Nunes et al.

Summary: This study introduced a novel method of petrophysical characterization of coquinas through a multi-technique and multi-scale approach, analyzing mineralogical content, x-ray attenuation, and pore type to define tomofacies and rock types. The upscaling method using tomofacies and rock types proved to be successful in improving reservoir characterization in heterogeneous and complex limestone successions, revealing better reservoir quality in the upper portion of the Morro do Chaves Formation core and poorer reservoir quality influenced by cementation processes in the lower portion.

Impact of depositional and diagenetic features on petrophysical and rock mechanical properties in Arab-D reservoir equivalent upper Jubaila Formation, Saudi Arabia

Viswasanthi Chandra et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of multiscale geological, petrophysical and rock mechanical data acquired from 35 m of outcrop well core from the Late Jurassic Upper Jubaila Formation in Saudi Arabia. The study identified four main lithofacies types and discussed factors influencing rock properties and mechanical behavior, such as mineralogy, dedolomitization, and permeability controls. Despite reduced porosity, the compressive rock strength in the outcrop core was found to be lower than that of the subsurface equivalent rocks, indicating overall weakening of the rock due to telogenetic processes and surface weathering.
