Supplements without Bidimensionalism

Summary: In this study, Potts's (2005) argument for a multidimensional semantics is challenged. Using data from English, French, and German, an alternative analysis is proposed. This analysis suggests that appositives can be syntactically attached with matrix scope, even in embedded positions, and can also interact semantically with other operators. These findings are explained without the need for a new dimension of meaning.

Summary: In some sign languages, plurals can be realized through repetitions of a noun, with unpunctuated repetitions often interpreted as 'at least' and punctuated repetitions typically corresponding to 'exactly'. This prevalence of the mechanism could indicate that Universal Grammar not only specifies the abstract properties of grammatical elements, but also their phonological realization in the visual modality.
