Effect of Poisson's ratio on the indentation of open cell foam

O. Duncan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the conformity of conventional and auxetic foam indentation response with classical indentation theory. Foam cubes with dimensions of 20-25 mm were produced, with Poisson's ratios ranging from negative to positive values (-0.35 to 0.3). These cubes were subjected to compression testing and indentation using cylindrical and stud indenters, to a depth of 20% of their thickness. The true strains were measured using digital image correlation to determine the Poisson's ratios and study foam deformation during indentation. By using incremental Poisson's ratios and tangent moduli, the indentation force vs. displacement was measured and calculated. The normalized root mean square errors between the measured and calculated indentation forces were found to be approximately 5% of the measured values. The densification and compression of the foam during indentation increased with the magnitude of the negative Poisson's ratio, potentially exceeding the predictions from indentation theory.

In-plane energy absorption characteristics of a modified re-entrant auxetic structure fabricated via 3D printing

Niranjan Kumar Choudhry et al.

Summary: In this study, the in-plane energy absorption characteristics of modified re-entrant auxetic honeycombs were investigated, showing a 36% improvement in specific energy absorption capacity compared to conventional structures. The introduced nodes with low rotational stiffness contributed to the enhanced energy absorption capacity of the modified structure.

Auxetic Materials for Personal Protection: A Review

Danish Tahir et al.

Summary: Life-changing illnesses and fatalities caused by inefficient personal protective clothing and equipment are increasing. The discrepancy between test standards, environmental conditions, and actual collisions is the reason why personal protection equipment and clothing have not reduced injuries in fields such as military and sports. Auxetic materials are suggested as a solution due to their unique properties. This review discusses the importance of auxetic materials in personal protection and explores possible improvements in protection products.

Implementation of periodic boundary conditions for loading of mechanical metamaterials and other complex geometric microstructures using finite element analysis

Luke Mizzi et al.

Summary: The implementation of PBCs is crucial and challenging in computational analysis of structures and materials, especially for complex geometries like mechanical metamaterials. This work analyzes a common PBCs implementation technique and introduces an alternative method for simulating 2D microstructural geometries with quadrilateral unit cells. It also provides a detailed schematic for studying 3D systems using both methods.

A novel hybrid-honeycomb structure: Enhanced stiffness, tunable auxeticity and negative thermal expansion

Xiang-Long Peng et al.

Summary: A novel hybrid-honeycomb structure with enhanced stiffness is proposed, and its effective thermoelastic properties can be widely tunable by tailoring the microstructural geometry and the constituent materials. The structure can be designed to concurrently possess an enhanced stiffness and a high degree of auxeticity and negative thermal expansion by properly choosing the geometrical and material parameters.

In-plane dynamic crushing of a novel gradient square honeycomb with enhanced energy absorption

Wei Min Wang et al.

Summary: A novel square honeycomb with rods added to the interior of square cell elements was proposed to improve energy absorption and modify dynamic crushing behavior. Numerical simulations showed that one of the gradient square honeycombs demonstrated the best specific energy absorption at low velocities, while the buffered square honeycomb exhibited the best crushing force efficiency at mid-velocity collisions. Additionally, the slip degree of honeycomb deformation mode was strongly inhibited for one of the novel square honeycombs, showing the zero Poisson ratio effect.
