Bandgaps in functionally graded phononic crystals containing graphene origami-enabled metamaterials

Liangteng Guo et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the dispersion characteristics of elastic waves in functionally graded laminated phononic crystals (FGLPCs) containing auxetic metamaterials enabled by graphene origami. The material properties of FGLPCs are determined by genetic programming-assisted micromechanical models, with nonuniform distributions of graphene weight fraction and hydrogen coverage in unit cells. The dispersion relations of elastic waves are obtained using the state space approach and the method of reverberation-ray matrix. The study shows that introducing auxetic metamaterials into FGLPCs can effectively manipulate elastic waves, with graded distribution of weight fraction leading to bandgaps for both transverse and longitudinal waves.

Functionally Graded Soft Dielectric Elastomer Phononic Crystals: Finite Deformation, Electro-Elastic Longitudinal Waves, and Band Gaps Tunability via Electro-Mechanical Loading

Zeeshan Alam et al.

Summary: Active tuning of elastic wave band gaps has received significant attention recently. Soft dielectric elastomers (DEs) have shown great promise due to their ability to undergo large reversible deformations and deformation-dependent constitutive properties. In this study, we investigate the longitudinal wave band gaps of an infinite periodic soft functionally graded dielectric elastomer under electro-mechanical biasing fields. The material properties of the functionally graded DE are described by a power law, and the nonlinear hyperelastic compressible neo-Hookean model is used to characterize the constitutive behavior. The band structure of the soft functionally graded DE structure is determined using the finite element method with Bloch-Floquet theory. A parametric study reveals the influence of biasing fields and power law exponent on the band gap characteristics. The findings reported here have potential applications in the design of soft DE wave devices with tunable band structures.

Summary: This paper proposes a new phononic crystal composite beam model that utilizes microstructure and flexoelectric effects to enhance the bandgap frequency and achieve tunable bandgaps. The research shows that microstructure and flexoelectric effects have a significant impact on bandgap generation at micro- and nano-scales, but can be neglected at the macro scale.

Layerwise Theories of Laminated Composite Structures and Their Applications: A Review

Dinghe Li

Summary: Analyzing the displacement and stress fields in laminated composite structures is challenging due to transverse anisotropy and higher transverse flexibilities. Equivalent single-layer theory (EST) simplifies the problem to a pure 2D problem with good global response but poor local response, while 3D displacement-based FEM provides accurate results with high computational cost. Layerwise theories (LWT) offer a more accurate and efficient solution between EST and 3D FEM, making it more popular with advances in computer technology.

Summary: In this study, a novel composite material incorporating aligned graphene with localized origami shapes into the copper matrix is designed. Unlike many auxetic materials, this layer-by-layer assembled composite material appears to be solid in the microscopic scale, showing potential for unique mechanical properties. The molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the in-plane Poisson's ratio and Young's modulus of origami graphene reinforced copper composites can be tuned from positive to negative, depending on the origami shapes.

Wave propagation in one-dimensional fluid-saturated porous phononic crystals with partial-open pore interfaces

Shu-Yan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the influence of interface conditions between adjacent layers on wave propagation in fluid-saturated porous periodic structures. Different methods are used to obtain the complex band structure and poroelastic Bloch waves of the crystal, while analyzing the effects of pore blockage, porosity, and viscosity. The results show that pore blockage significantly affects the dispersion of poroelastic waves and energy partition between solid skeleton and pore fluid. The effects of porosity and viscosity in the case of the partial-open pore interface condition are similar to those in fully open pore conditions previously obtained.
