The Effects of Mobile AR-based Biology Learning Experience on Students' Motivation, Self-Efficacy, and Attitudes in Online Learning

Tahsin Ciloglu et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to enhance online biology learning using mobile augmented reality (AR) applications and assess their impact on students' motivation, self-efficacy, and attitudes toward biology learning. Interviews were conducted with students and the usefulness of mobile AR applications was evaluated using a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest approach. The experimental group consisting of 45 high school students who participated in mobile AR-based biology learning had significantly higher self-efficacy ratings compared to the control group after a 12-week trial. However, there were no statistically significant differences in motivation and attitudes toward biology learning between the experimental and control group students. Furthermore, student interviews revealed that mobile AR applications were considered innovative, non-distracting, successful in knowledge acquisition, engaging, intriguing, and entertaining, helping with information retention, concretizing the subject, and facilitating learning.

Hip reconstruction using a customized intercalary prosthesis with the rhino horn-designed uncemented stem for ultrashort proximal femur segments following tumor resection: a combined biomechanical and clinical study

Xin Hu et al.

Summary: Background: Hip-preserved reconstruction for patients with ultrashort proximal femur segments following extensive femoral diaphyseal tumor resection is a challenging procedure. Methods: This study aimed to analyze and compare the biomechanical behavior and clinical outcomes of a customized intercalary prosthesis with a rhino horn-designed uncemented stem for the reconstruction of these extensive skeletal defects. Results: The biomechanical results showed that the rhino horn-designed uncemented stem had better stress and displacement distribution patterns compared to the straight stem. Stem A performed better in terms of biomechanical performance, while the fixation system with Stem B was relatively unstable. The clinical results were consistent with the finite element analysis (FEA) results. Conclusion: The rhino horn-designed uncemented stem offers precise shape matching and osseointegration. This novel prosthesis design may reduce the risk of mechanical failure and aseptic loosening, particularly when using Stem A. Therefore, the customized intercalary prosthesis with this rhino horn-designed uncemented stem may be a suitable option for the reconstruction of ultrashort proximal femur segments following extensive tumor resection.

Comparison of Case-Based Learning and Traditional Lectures in an Orthopedic Residency Anatomy Course

Leah Demetri et al.

Summary: This study compared the impact of case-based learning (CBL) versus traditional lectures in an orthopedic surgery residency anatomy course for medical education. The results showed no significant differences in resident engagement, satisfaction, and knowledge acquisition between CBL and lecture sessions, indicating both methods are effective for highly motivated learners.
