Forecasting precipitation based on teleconnections using machine learning approaches across different precipitation regimes

Jalil Helali et al.

Summary: Precipitation forecasts using machine learning algorithms showed strong associations with El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), with the Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and Least Squares Support Vector Machine (LSSVM) algorithms performing well. However, LSSVM showed a tendency towards overfitting. Precipitation forecasting in hyper-arid and arid areas proved challenging due to erratic and sparse distribution. Clustering precipitation regimes and considering microclimate were found to be vital for reliable forecasts. These findings have implications for drought/flood risk management and improving food-water security in Iran.

Particle swarm optimization based LSTM networks for water level forecasting: A case study on Bangladesh river network

Jannatul Ferdous Ruma et al.

Summary: Floods are catastrophic natural disasters, and water level forecasting is crucial for flood prevention. Artificial intelligence techniques like artificial neural networks (ANN) have been used to develop models for predicting water levels. Recent research has shown that deep learning techniques, particularly long short-term memory (LSTM) networks, are more effective in forecasting hydrological data.
